Absolutely correct decision in my opinion. A seemingly small thing, but massive in terms of changing the mentality surrounding England. Yes, this time 3rd or 4th place is a really outstanding achievement. But longer term, we are instilling into them that losing in the semi finals is not going to be deemed a success. https://www.independent.co.uk/sport...e-play-off-when-is-it-what-time-a8445831.html
Yes, fully agree. let's hope we can have one in 2 years time. Can't watch game today, as I'm working. Not too bothered TBH. I hope they can put in a good display though.
With the cheapest tickets being £120, I'll probably be giving it a miss as well. A pity as I'd have liked to go, but not for that.
I wouldn't say that reaching a world cup semi final should be regarded as failure. Yeah, technically failure to make the final or win the whole competition, but I don't think any English man can honestly say that they expected the team to progress far after the group games. Best finish in 28 years, golden boot contender in our ranks and the nucleus of a good team, that with a few key additions could do well in the next euros. Not complete success, but not a complete failure either.
Totally agree. We would have looked as pathetic as Wales did two years ago. Piers Morgan on thursday morning was really getting under the skin of Susanna Reid. She was saying the England team are heros for bringing the country together. He quite rightly pointed out that they did just that and did well, but that heros win stuff therefore our England team aren't heros.
Southgate was also right when he said that a parade would be in one particular area and his team represents the whole country.
I heard on talksport that the players didn’t want one either based on the fact that that haven’t won owt. Put yourself in their position, you’d feel a bit daft wouldn’t you?
He's absolutely correct. It would have been a chance for Londoners to celebrate with our southern based national team.
What about if they win today and pick up a bronze medal? Should they be treated in the same way we would treat bronze medal winning olympians? I'm not sure how that is by the way
