Lol, yes, I know that I said Eric should be in automatically then went and voted for Hammill. Eric was the heart of the team in my early years and his service to the club is immense. I voted for Hammill because he gave me some memories that will live with me as long as I draw breath. The goal in the play off final is unforgettable and one of THE iconic moments of watching us for …….a lot of years.
Too soon for me, give him a few years away and I'll start getting all misty eyed about him. For me, it was the performance and goal against York in the JPT that singled him out, he absolutely knackered himself to get us back into that game, he could hardly walk at the end and yet still had the skill to score a classic Hammill goal.
Plenty of oldies in the shortlist. Surprised that Danny Wilson is not amongst them (when Allan Clarke is!)
There have been hundreds of players that have played for us and dozens of managers. As it's just started, there will obviously be true legends who wont be in it. McCormack, Hine, Tufnell, Joyce, Eaden, Watson, Aylott, Evans and so so many more. They will all get the chance in future years. A wonderful idea and one I hoped would emerge, or a museum. The club doesn't often get credit, It absolutely must now. I hope vintage footage is captured and added to their profiles and more elaborate statistics, showreels of goals or key saves or celebrations. So in 50 years, new fans can still see the likes of Hammills Wembley double, Watsons double save at St james Park and Hendries turn and shot at Bramall Lane and Archdeacons thunderbolt against Leicester.
