Just saw it mentioned on Calendar Høyland's George Raynor manager of Sweden in 1958 world cup final https://www.worldsoccer.com/blogs/george-raynor-the-one-that-got-away-334543
I used to work with a George Rayner from Hoyland. Wonder if he was related. He was the shearer driver on our coal-face. He transferred to our pit when Skiers Spring/Platts Common pit closed.
He said he was transferred from skiers to his pit and he drove the shearer at his pit during the eighties not shearer driver at skiers on the eighties
That’s right a small group of men transferred to Houghton Main pit in the early 80s. They always referred to themselves as Skiers Spring men. I would guess that this George Rayner would be about in his mid 70s now (if still alive of course)
Amazing how few folk know abart this. It was also Pele `s first world cup he got a hattrick in semis and 2 int final.
George signed professional terms with Sheffield Utd. in 1930, followed by spells at mansfield, rotherham, bury and aldershot before going into management. He managed at, Iraq XI 1943-1945 Aldershot Reserves 1945-1946 GAIS (Gothenburg) 1947- 1948 AIK (Stockholm) 1948-1952 Atvidaberg FF 1952-1954 Juventus 1954 Lazio 1954-1955 Coventry City 1956 Sweden 1956-1958 Skegness Town 1958-1960 Djurgardens IF 1960 Sweden 1961 Donny Rovers 1967-1968 George and his wifes ashes are in an unmarked grave in elsecar. A few of us have met with his remaining family to try and get some recognition on the grave. We are slowly moving forward with it and the council have already started to renovate the grave site. We have written to all the top clubs where george managed to ask for an auction item. Guess what we have not had one reply. Never mind we will fundraise in our local pub to cover it. Onwards and upwards. Phil
Phil, good on you. If I can help in any way just let me know. I thaught I was the one interested in the man and his achievements. Dave
