Bit of a delayed post but thought that Gillinghams keeper Tomas Holy looked decent. Maybe should have stopped Moores goal but it was a tremendous strike to be fair to him. Looked confident in his kicking, just kicked it a bit hard a couple of times where it carried straight through to Davies. Again looked confident on commanding his area with crosses, caught anything fired in too close to him.. Think he only will have 6 month left on his contract there come January. Reckon he is one worth looking at in January as real competition for Davies..
I would look at getting a new second choice in for sure as from what I have seen of Walton so far he is not ready for this level yet and maybe could benefit with some time out on loan. Holy could be a good one to look at for sure. Only 26 and was weirdly linked to Arsenal in the summer so he must have something about him if they were linked.
I think Walton will be a top class keeper,on his full debut against Forest away last season he was very good and confident and kicking good. He had a bad game at Blackpool but he’s played first team in Championship and is a fine replacement with the current defence in front of him . Just needs games and a confident save an he’ll be as good as they get in my opinion
I’m not sure on him, possibly as a number 2 to try and push Davies but I’m not against Walton being that. We’ll see how Walton fares possibly tonight but definitely on Saturday. Regards to the Gillingham keeper, his height is useful from crosses but he seemed like he could barely get down, as evident with Moore’s goal.
Don't think he did a lot wrong with the pen, if Moore had not hit it that firmly, he would have saved it.
Maybe so, not saying he should have saved it just it showed a weakness of his to get down low. He did look decent, all keeps at this level will have flaws.
Interestingly, some of their fans on the internet were slating him, and saying that he's not good enough.
I was not at the Forest game so cant say much based on that. But in the games I have seen him in he has not looked great. The West Brom friendly he looked very shakey especially with the ball at his feet. Sure there is talent in there and glad to see him sign a long term deal but not really at a level to push Davies at the moment for me. Big test for him Saturday to impress and hopefully he delivers.
The Gillingham manager put the blame for the first goal on the keeper. Felt he should have saved it as it beat him at his near post. Quote was given in THe Football League Paper on Sunday.
Moore caught him cold by hitting so early don't think he expected it. I'm sure he was very dissapointed to let it in.
If Davies had conceded that goal some would have gone mad on here. Holy is tall, but nothing else makes him any more comfortable than a very average lower league keeper.
The injury to Rory Watson shows how vulnerable are in this area. If something like this happened to Davies the only alternative to Walton would be someone out of contract until January comes around
Nah. He looked ok, but that’s it. Should have done better with Moore’s goal - Davies would have been slated for letting that in. Also, why would he leave 1st team football to be on the bench at Oakwell, probably not earning much more than he already does. Also, at 26, he’s probably too old for us - I.e no resale value. Happy with Davies and Walton at the mo. Walton needs more experience granted, but he did well last season. Oh, and if Davies did get injured, there’s Jake Greatorex and can’t we still do emergency loans for keepers?
