Yes I find it surprising because anyone with a brain or an ounce of decency can make the clear and obvious distinction between immigration and racism. To stand in a public area and shout racist abuse at any player is beyond the pale and cannot be excused by anything.

It is although I'd think many people are just too worried about the potential consequences of getting involved which is understandable. I just don't understand anybody who would think it ok to do this in the first place regardless of the possibility of being challenged.

    Me neither.

The only time I challenged someone about it, I was told I would get my fúcking throat cut after the game.

    I ain't doing it again.

Okay, I'll ask. Did you really hear that? Those actual words?? I'm not doubting we've got our share of braindead f**ks- I've heard (and reported) 'em on more than one occasion - but find it hard to believe anyone would go that far with their abuse. Just wonderin'.......

dont Know what’s worse in this thread the original point or Nudgernot knowing what’s socially acceptable these days.
Not to mention the bit about anything to unsettle a player is fair game, because (a) that kind of thing might have been OK in the 70’s but....
And it was one of our own fking fans , why would he want to unsettle him?

    I don’t think that’s disgusting at all.

If I’m at a match & a lad makes a racist comment then in my eyes he’s probably also the type who’s think nothing of having a fight. Then you’ve got to take into account he’s probably had a few beers & in a group of mates.

You tell a steward & what can the steward do? Unless they hear it themselves or there’s a large group that report it the steward can’t kick him / them out.

If it was as simple as saying to someone that’s bang out of order give it a rest & they did then we’d all report it but I don’t think that’s the case

On a positive note I’ve not heard any racism in Oakwell since around the times we had Odejayi, JCR & Moore so I think things are much better.

Obviously there’s still racists supporting us that’s inevitable but I think they’re decreasing in number

Gordon, no I do not report it at the game, in retrospect I should’ve. I was too angry, and I never thought of it at the time. To be fair, this is mainly because, I was extremely disappointed with our fan’s attitude, and I didn’t want this to ruin the game any more than it already had.

In the past, I’ve stood up to and challenged the bigots twice before. Once at Oakwell, when we played Villa in the FA Cup, and once, at Bradford away. Both were very unpleasant experiences, and on both occasions, it was me against a rabid pack. Also, my health isn’t the best at the moment due to illness, and I was in no position to be able to defend myself.

Conan, because I am not a regular poster and I’ve only made a few posts, you seem to imply that you would’ve taken my allegation a lot more seriously if I was a regular, like I have some type of hidden agenda. I actually believe that something like this is worth drawing attention to, hence the post. If you went to the game on Saturday, you would’ve seen my flag, does this give me more credibility, and make me more of a genuine fan? I don’t post much on BBS, because I don’t like the attention. However, I've read it for years.

Micky Finn, yes I did hear those words, it was during the second half.

Wtf has that got to do with anything?

A lot of responses here appear to show some fans are more annoyed at the OP for bringing it up than the racist abuse itself.

When I challenged someone, it was in a fairly busy away section in that temporary stand at Blackpool. Under Davey, I think.

There was nowhere to move me away from the person who was threatening to kill me due to the number of fans we had.

The steward did what she could for me, which was nothing. Not her fault. She was sympathetic but had no power.

The thick racists can sing what they like and do what they like. Not my job to tell them the error of their ways.

Exactly. You’re proof of what I fear would happen.

The last thing I need when I’ve gone for a day out is to be spending the match on edge that some racist & his mates are going to try & give me an hiding

No need to confront them. Just leave your seat, find a copper or steward and calmly tell them what was said and discreetly point the relevant people out. I've done this on three occasions in the past and on two of those, supporters have been removed.

Seen an unnerving amount of “Don’t want to ruin my day out/the match” with regard to not properly reporting this. If that’s where your priorities are, you don’t get to complain

Get the 'Kick It Out' app on your phone and get it reported. This info is passed on to the club and they have to investigate. Probably come to nothing, but lets not pretend this stuff doesn't still go on at football.

Maybe this is the first thing he/she felt strongly enough about to post?

    Fair enough I say.

Absolutely abhorrent behaviour, but sadly I’m not hugely surprised.

Some of our fans will find nothing wrong at all with what he said, and the same fans will hugely complain when we are heavily policed and stewarded at every away game.

Incidents like this, and the bits of violence with stewards at Coventry, are the reason I’m reluctant to take my lad to away games. The experience is invariably spoilt by pillocks who defend their right to act like a 1970’s hooligan to the hilt.

Disgusting. However, I don't see it nessercery to write it on a forum where Jacob or his family could see it. You should have reported it, there were enough police around the place to do so. Writing it a couple of days after the event is a waste of time as nothing can now be done.
