Did Mowatt replace Hourihane? Thought it was Matty James?

Just a side point on James - is he injured again as he hasn't played since 3rd March.

 

I thought we did really well at Fleetwood to come back from a goal down to win. Especially off the back of the Coventry defeat and the events of the last home game which must have unsettled the players.
Interesting to see if we can press on now.

Why? James was a good player for us. On loan maybe, but as good as we could get.

Hourihane fecked off for 28k a week. How do you replace someone with his ability like for like without spending silly money?

 

Because Hourihane had goals and assists in him. Matty James didn't, and wasn't our player. He was there for fitness.

We should have spent some of the Stones/Mawson/£6m TV/45% increase in gate money on a proper replacement.

Whilst the article is obviously a bit of self preservation, I can believe that. Certainly. And it isn’t right that this would be done to a manager/head coach of a championship club.

There will still be some though that say that not only is that false, he chose all the signings too.

We have a better manager now imo - but if he’d stayed I think we’d have survived last season.

He’ll be hated forever by some for how he left - but had he resigned citing being unable to work under the constraints and shackles, it might be a different story.

I’m not sure he’ll be a success anywhere in the future, maybe it was a flash in the pan, but I refuse to rewrite history and say he did anything less than a great job for us.

 

The entire article more or less sums up what we all surmised at the time.... and for months afterwards.
It goes to show we fans are not completely stupid and out of touch with reality.
If what he says is true it puts things into perspective regarding our late owner. Maybe things were not all sweetness and light between the two of them and the hugs and kisses at the two finals were a prelude to an irrevocable split when the new season in the Championship had to be sorted out.

 

How much money do you think would have replaced a player commanding 28 grand a week?

How much would YOU have paid him to make him the highest paid player at the club?

All easy in theory and with someone else's money.

I’m absolutely seething after reading that - I always thought there was something wrong - and actually asked Radio Sheffield to investigate.

The best manager at Barnsley in my lifetime was pushed.

 

I'd started disliking him well before he left. Some of his passing the buck was wearing thin, and watching the lads get routinely beat whilst our fans sang his name was just too much.

With all due respect Fitzy mate, Hecky wasn't talking about competing with the wage Villa offered. He was talking about offering him a new contract well in advance of that. Let's at least talk about what he says. And if we're talking about money then some of it was mine and some of it was yours and some of it was all the other members of this forum. And personally, I would have liked my money to have gone to offering the likes of Winnall and Hourihane new contracts 18 months before they actually were.
