This is the first and only season from memory supporting the reds (30ish years) I can recall where we haven’t
a had loan player on our books!

Are we the only side in league 1 not to have a player in on loan? Not counting recent emergency loan for goalkeeper!
Quite admirable! We have always heavily relied on loan players arguably to much so. We’ve unearthed some gems and had a few duds...

Pleasing to see us invest in and developing talent. But wouldn’t be opposed to 2-3 loans coming to to compliment the current crop! the next Steele, Butland, Dickinson, Shotton, Long, Tripper, Drinkwater, Morsy, Williams, Hammill, Gardner, Kent, Barnes, Kent, Wood, Chapman, Waring, Rodriguez, Armstrong, McBurnie, Fletcher would do!

Woodrow is technically on loan until January but you're right it's good to be in this position for a change. I wouldn't mind an experienced head in on loan in January.

The general point is right we haven't relied on loans at all. Woodrow is but it's also a done deal we can't back out of so I wouldn't really count that just leaves Bahre

we should be utilising all tools at our disposal to get out of this league. A couple of quality loans could make the difference to going up or staying down. Could give our team that extra dimension. Religiously sticking to the plan would be restrictive and counter productive if better players are available to us. Just like only signing under 23 players. As a principle it’s great and fully support and understand it. But if it ends up restricting progress then it’s not going to last long.

You are right we are not giving ourselves every advantage available to get out of this league and that could cost us eg Kane at Donny could finish above us.

Loaning for loaning sake is not good. But the Woodrow situation with it being a permy in Jan is what we should be taking advantage of. Bahre's loan is a bit of an enigma really. It looks like he's here just cos of Stendel, hopefully this next month he can stake his claim in the first team.

I am not sure about loaning players for the last 30 seasons , I cannot remember any pre 2000 but I am sure someone will remind me of a few, but I take your points . I think that this january is the perfect time to invest in loan players ,as opposed to permanents , already assuming Woodrow is a done deal . Two or three quality loan signings could be just the input we need to help us get over the line & if we fail , then we have not committed to high earning contacts & can adjust the squad in the summer . Incidentally I have just thought of a player we had on loan & then signed many years ago , Brian MaCord & possibly Chris Lumsdon , shows you how much I know !

Siggi Jonsson is one that really stands out in my memory from pre 2000.

Wouldn't it be just typical of a Premiership club called Fulham to try to wangle their way out of the Woodrow deal, especially if they are still bottom and Woodrow is scoring loads.
You can see it now... "Fulham recall Woodrow on emergency panic deal and tell lowly third division club Burnley to sod off, he was never their player anyway."

Know what you are saying, but I would suggest that they are tied into a deal with us ,especially when Woodrow said last night on the radio that he was hoping to draw Fulham in the cup . I also think that these new loan/buy deals must be concrete, otherwise with Tom Bradshaw injured & out for the rest of the season, Millwall would have pulled the plug & sent him back to us, which is the norm when loan players get injured, they return to their parent club for treatment & subsequently ending the loan.

Way back when I were a lad and all this were fields you got loan players in to cover injuries rather than as a planned for part of the squad.
There was no having at least two players for every position mullarkey other than one of those two players mostly being a youngster from the reserves or youth team.

Isn't Bahre with an obligation to buy at the end of the season also?

We have a very big squad & invest heavily in our academy, so I agree, that with the odd exception (like the goalkeeper loan) it's good we are developing our own players, rather than youth players from further up the pyramid. We've always been hard on our own players for some reason, but given players like Ryan Kent lots of leeway to get up to speed. Usually when they are up to speed, like Harvey Barnes they are recalled anyway.

Hadn’t appreciated Bahre was loan. But general point being a positive i.e. this season we are self sufficient and not reliant on loan system. In recent years we have been over reliant on loans often with 5+ on the books.

That said. A couple of quality loans in key positions I feel would benefit us. Now we have a foundation in place. A loan deal with mutual benefit for us and the player e.g. Matty James, Gary Gardner, came needing to play and build match fitness, and added quality, leadership and experience to the squad.

Without looking. The pre 2000 loan that springs to mind is John Curtis (Man Utd). But we started to rely on loans from early 2000’s.
