Seeing as we can clearly get out of this division under our own financial steam as we've done it before, it would be completely illogical to start chucking money at it right now. However, that's quite different to not selling our best players when handily placed in the table, which is short term profitable, but long term suicide. Therefore, this would also be a completely illogical approach. I fully expect that from now on whichever league we're in, that players will only be sold for the right price, and that never again will an entire team be dismantled at once. I also think that we will see some modest investment on the playing side once we're back in the second tier, otherwise we'll be forever yo-yoing between the second and third tiers, something which I very much doubt is part of the new owners' plans.
If we get into the Championship - then those 1st Division players then become Championship players. Championship players are generally worth more than 1st Division players. Therefore as an owner of a club in 4th place of the 1st Division - do you: 1) Sit tight and hope the current squad achieves promotion? 2) Add a bit to the squad to increase the chances of promotion? I’d go with the latter.
But what if you and your mate weren’t particularly interested in the ‘vintage car’, didn’t particularly have a desire to drive it as you’d got a bigger and better one elsewhere anyway, but bought it simply because as a long term investment it was hugely unlikely to lose you any money - so long as you allow the money the ‘vintage car’ generated for itself from people paying to look at it etc to be spent on its upkeep so it doesn’t rust and devalue hugely? And besides the gearbox isn’t likely to be seen as a huge problem as such - it’s not broken. There are of course better gearboxes available, and the car would function much better with one, but it goes with the gearbox it has so it might not be seen viable to buy a new one. Similarly there are better tyres, brakes and even engines on the market. Doesn’t mean we will buy them. I fooking hate analogies Nudger but there we go...
"The transfer window should certainly give us an indication of their intentions and if they are really only interested in the profits that were made in the last couple of years under Patrick (assuming there is some demand for our players)" Do we really believe, given the wealth of the owners, that they are really that bothered about the level of profit made by Patrick. Small change in their world I would think. LIke you say though, they are not going to throw money around but as successful as they are, they know the difference between prudent 'speculate to accumulate' practice and 'splashing the cash' needlessly.
The one thing that's never factored in to any of these discussions is the players themselves. Sometimes, like with Hourihane, it was about a challenge at a bigger club, at a higher level, a chance to push for international honours and a life changing pay rise. That's nothing to do with Barnsley being a selling club. I'd hazard a guess that Moore and Pinnock will go this month. Both are being looked at by Championship clubs, Pinnock is being watched by Premier League scouts. The huge difference is, I can't imagine the new owners having their bellies tickled when it comes to negotiations. We'll get more than pocket change plus sell on clauses etc. It would be massively disappointing to lose two key players during a promotion push of course but it happens.
You hate analogies but rant on about an analogy. Anyway I’ve got an analogy for you. I walk into this antiques fair and shout to all the stall holders “I’m fooking loaded and I’m willing to spend big time”. I then walk over to the first stall and see a vase that I like, I say to the stall holder “how much is that vase?” - he says “it’s £30 but to you my friend i’ll accept £250”.
Maybe his faced turned purple as he typed it, then he threw a cup at the wall immediately after posting. Who knows.
Always recall what a mate of Doncaster businessman Kevin McDonald once told me. Kevin who was originally a Plumber from Tollbar in Donny, founded Bartol ( a play on Tollbar) plastic rainwater and Plumbing fittings, Polypipe and MacDee toilet seat Companies. He bought a very expensive new Rolls Royce, covered it in some kind of anti rusting compound and sheeting and had a special air conditioned garage built to accommodate it and kept it for around five years. The thing was never ever taken and driven on the road by Kevin and he eventually sold it to a guy in America for around three times what he'd paid for it.
I would be extremely surprised if the loan of 32 year old Jake Wright from Sheffield United to us, became a reality.! https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2018/12/...d-fleetwood-town-favourites-to-sign-sheffiel/
