Under the old regime proberbly was prudent but arnt these guys billionaires and maybe thought we might actually ad some financial backbone to maybe fend other teams off and hope such as Potts and others maybe want to stop n try and win a promotion out of this league
The good old days of being successful with a mixture of youth and experience, spending good money on players and and reaching the promised land for the ultimate riches and as the best way to make a club richer.
Regardless of how much we received for potts....it will only be successful if a decent replacement is brought in.
If we get to the end of January with no more outgoings and we bring in a capable, ready-now, replacement for Brad then I'll be ok but as things stand now I am fearing the worst. The prize for getting out of this league is far bigger than the fee we got for Potts.
I would hope we get to the end of January stronger than we started it. That’s the only thing I’ll judge the window on. And also as long as we don’t drop points because we haven’t replaced players with suitable quality. We paid close to £1m for Brad. He has a 20% sell on to Blackpool, we’ve paid 18 months of wages - I’m curious to know what the substantial profit was. Anywhere around £2.5m would make sense, seeing as we rejected bids of £1.5m in the summer. The prize for beating Burnley on Saturday could be far higher than the profit we made from selling Brad Potts. Let alone promotion.
To sell Potts on the third of January does indeed send out a depressing message and you're right that there were a lot of us that rated him last season but could see the circumstances contributed to the performances of our better players. I'm going to try and stay positive and believe that we will recruit an adequate replacement and there will be no more of our better players departing. We should be used to this by now but it still feels like a kick in the nuts.
You can't take the cost of his wages into account. We got a return for that with his appearances (cue sarcastic comments from certain quarters). His wages would only be of relevance if he'd never kicked a ball for us.
Well I can take wages into account, given that the investment in the asset is the full value expended. Yes there has been a return in him playing but from a profit and loss perspective of Brad Potts you can’t simply exclude his wages because he played. Meaningless anyway. We’ll not know what significant profit is. It’s a throwaway comment similar to Knasmullner, Mallan etc.
Both could afford to The last owner did not plough the money off all the sales back into the club , the stones money in particular. Ffp is also a consideration. As others have said if we note get a decent winger this could be good business Potts was more replaceable than others in squad in that Dougall and mowatt currently own the two cm shirts The old regime would have sold to cash in and failed to replace. The new did bring us a better player than bradshaw when he left
If that genuinely happens without signing proper replacements for the sold players then yes we do have a problem.
People are currently up in arms about selling a player who WAS brought in to replace by the old regime.
Ye i get that but if replaced properly with a good winger and noone else leaves it will look good business In previous January windows players left unreplaced. The only example under current lot is bradshaw and we all can agree that woodrwow is better
Agreed. The fact Moore has been missing for the last two matches now makes me a little worried. If top 2 is a real target then losing any of our top players is myopic, in that there is £6 million in extra revenue in the Championship. It has taken Bahre several months to adjust to English football. If the plan is to bring in other overseas players to replace our top performers I have to think even the playoffs may be optimistic this season. I get the business model, but surely unless it is top dollar (and clearly Preston are not a club that will be playing much more than the quoted £1.5 million), it's better to do business in the summer, when we know what division we are in next season & we have a preseason to get players up to speed. Anyway, I'm gonna shut up about it now & wait & see what happens next!
Dont get me wrong I am concerned and agree with you. I am worried but currently its too soon to say nothing has changed. We need to see where we are on Feb 1st though of course if we have a repeat of January 17 and offload 2 or 3 more key players in the next couple of weeksI reserve the right to panic early. Im OK with us selling fringe players as long as we have better replacements lined up but not the spine of the team - if of Moore Woodrow Mowatt Dougall Lindsay and Pinnock go I will be deeply concerned, Bahre and Thiam also need to be kept unless we get offered stupid money I am less concerned if we offload the full backs or existing wingers especially if its to replace them with better than we have - that would make sense
Great post and I completely agree. I always liked Potts even last year and am sad to see him go, but he's a good league one player with potential to be a good championship player, I don't think he'll ever go on to be better than that although I'd like him to. I think £1.5m is a good fee for him if that's what we've got and we've definitely not had our pants down, every player has his price and that's about his. Now the pressure is back on the board to reinvest that £1.5m wisely as they did with the Bradshaw money and not go on to sell half the team in one hit, time will tell on that one.
They is that or we could just keep our better players like Potts ect untill the summer in the aim to reach our goal. If the goal fails we then sell.
