Was looking on wiki through alot of our ex-players who left. Most did alot worse after leaving with some exepctions. For example brian howard 27 goals for the reds in 3 or 4 years. After leaving 9 goals in 8 yrs. It is not always prudent to leave, good players at oakwell could become legends if they stayed. Just a observation from myself.

Probably a lot of them are much richer than if they'd have stayed though - kerching, it's all that matters.

True. Seems all about money now unlike the brendan o connell and andy rammell day. Loved our teams back then

Look at the clubs they're choosing, the last two for example - Millwall & Preston, although Bradders was mainly due to family reasons. Hardly teams with high earners and probably a 50/50 chance they're back in league 1 in a couple of years. If l was leaving Oakwell l would be looking at top end championship, maybe they're more bothered about the short term extra 1000 a week rather than their long term careers.

We are being a bit selective here though surely?

Stones, Mawson, Holgate (to a degree, don't think he will finish off worse than us anytime soon), Hourihane, dare I say Winnall :p... just to name a few.

Some stay put for family reasons too when they like the area and their children are settled into school well. Some things in life are better than a pile of money in the bank. Better to be a hero in Barnsley than sat on a bench not getting to play the game you love.

Rammell and O'Connel were before agents got their filthy paws on the game. I dare say they'd both have had their heads turned as well even if they were happy at Oakwell. Were they before the Bosman rule as well? If so we would have set a transfer fee for both of them which may have put off a potential new club.

Daz, it was the same back then.

Players left, we trawled the lower leagues because we didn’t have as much money as our competition.

They did well and they left.

The Bosman Rule changed football unfortunately and made contracts worthless almost and the power left the clubs and went solely to the players and agents.

Players have always left to get more money somewhere else. Granted not to the levels or frequency of today though.

Footballs been ****** for years for clubs like us.

My recollection of Eddie Loyden leaving is a County Cup final at the Well against Sheff U. We were losing 0.2 at half time and big Eddie scored a second half hat trick to win the cup.
He was sold the next morning to Chester City for a fee of £30,000 (might be wrong with the fee).
