Given our business model ...buy them cheap sell them for profit ...is it in the club's interest to stay in this division developing players challenging for a top 10 finish rather than promotion to the championship where the standard is higher and young players don't have the ability to step up that extra notch at this time of their career thus seeing us struggling at the bottom of the table ( whilst in this league they get time ) ..which then sees a drop in revenue along with higher expenditure for the club ...not good for the fans I know but financial rewards for the owners following the present model Discussion discussion discussion over to you guys what's your thoughts
No they don’t need the money. But they clearly aren’t putting any money in so the club needs to be self sufficient. They don’t need the money but they did buy barnsley as an investment. As the club turns more and more profit other buyers will show an interest and Lee can sell the club for double what he paid for it. That’s how the rich stay rich. Buy cheap. Spend nothing. Sell for substantial profit
You are saying this like it's a negative. I don't want my club to be reliant on billionaires pumping cash into it to stay afloat. Simple fact is we don't need it. They have steadied the ship, and are now offering us the solid backing we need for us to push forward under our own steam. They also have the cash to back us if we start consistently performing at a higher level (re match day experience, ground renovations etc).
I’m not saying it’s a negative at all, that just how it is at Barnsley and probably a fair few other clubs. Like you say I prefer that to badly run clubs like Sunderland/Bolton/Portsmouth. But there’s no point us moaning about standing still ect. It is what it is
I think the idea is that the higher up the pyramid we go, the better quality young players we can bring in for higher fees with the aim of selling for even higher fees
Wonder how much Mario Balotelli is getting paid at Nice? Is there a 'business model' there? The higher up the less conservative maybe.
One of the few comments that have slipped out from the ownership was that following relegation, it would take longer to start "the plan" properly. So whatever comes next (and anyone's guess is as good as mine) compared to what we're seeing now, is likely to be different, I'd hope at the stage that they know they can execute their plan, they share it with the fans. I don't think we'll see excessive spending, I do think whatever league we're in, players as assets is a keener driver than players with ability but a write off after their time with us. If we compare player contracts with the previous owner, they are longer, there are clauses to extend in the clubs favour, and they seem to want to offload players if they can't generate future profit from them. So that seems a step forward. If those fees are reinvested for overall betterment, the club could move forward. But, I can't envisage any business plan generating any significant value for the owners from sustaining relegation from when they first acquired the club, either as an asset disposal, provision of a credit line, or generating revenue returns from modest player sales year on year.
I think Balotelli was there ahead of their purchase. Seri went to Fulham for a fair chunk of money from Nice in the summer though. Its difficult to know if they want a portfolio of clubs in different countries at different levels, or if each club has an individual strategy geared to the league, culture and revenues.
I believe the owner's aim is to be a stable Championship Club, generating it's own income. Then see what if anything develops, football wise, such as a go at promotion to the premier league. I think they were surprised we were relegated last season, but it doesn't seem to have altered their plans, other than infrastructure improvements.
Are owners allowed to put personal wealth into clubs anymore? Genuine question, I thought it was prohibited now in EUFA leagues.
That doesn’t add up. You said .... i don’t want Billionaires pumping cash into it. Then you said ..... they (owners) have steadied the ship.
Bottom line for me is I don't want to follow a club that exists purely for making money. That's not sport and I have no desire to see us staying in the third tier just to cash in on the fairly modest rewards of developing players. If that's what the current owners want then I'd have a huge axe to grind. I can't see any way they are happy with that sort of return though. I'm sure a return is what they're after. As long as their goals go hand in hand with those of the fans I'm happy with that. I'm not daft enough to think they're going to turn us into Manchester City inside three years though.
When they took over, didn't Paul Conway say they would fund a tilt at getting into the Premiership, but they wouldn't do anything crazy.? The Board have never given any views to contradict that statement, so can we assume that is still the plan. ? I honestly don't think they will want to remain in League One ad infinitum.
Isn't any business' model to buy cheap and sell at profit? Sure that's what Dunc Bannatyne said. It's buying cheap and not being able to sell that's the killer.
