I read on the new stuff in the ESL that Steve Agnew’s debut lasted only 10 seconds - Can anyone tell us why? We’re too young
He came on as a substitute against Charlton at home, in the Spring of 1984. When asked why he'd sent Agnew on at that moment, the caretaker manager Bobby Collins said he didn't realise there was so little time left.
Remember that... ran on full of enthusiasm and a round of applause only for ref to blow up straight away! Was the start of something good though ... great player for us. Where did he go after us? Can't remember
Blackburn for 700k. Think he was the first of Jack Walkers big signings. Promptly got injured for them and didn’t get much of a look in after all the other big players came in and went to Leicester and played in midfield with Gary McAllister
He was their record signing at the time, just before Dalglish came in. Played 2 league games for them having got injured early on. Keith Hill was in the same squad that got promoted to the inaugural Premier League.
You are right, just checked. I knew Aggy quite well back then and used to see him quite a lot. I thought I remembered conversations with him about playing in the same team. I’ve obviously got a really **** memory!
Always liked watching ' Aggy play for us. Never gave less than his best. He always made a point of running towards the Ponte end to sign autographs for the kids and have a chat with some of the crowd. Always remember, just before went back to rejoin his teammates he would kick the wall with both feet in turn, to get rid of any grass or muck that had built up to the underside of his boots. A great character and one of my favourites of that time.
My favourite Aggy memory would have to be his winner at Southampton in 1985. Long trip on a Monday night made worthwhile as he pinged it past Shilton.
Another snippet from that game. Ronnie Moore was playing for Charlton, so naturally Barnsley fans were serenading him with his own song. Moore was laughing his socks of with regards to it all the match. Towards the end, he was substituted and duly received a warm round of applause, which he reciprocated. He sat on the wall in front of the stand for the rest of the game, talking & joking with the home fans in that section, signing autographs for some of the kids, too.
Me too. Great strike in a great win. Made a long trip well worth it. Was the same day the miners marched back to work if memory serves me correctly?
At the risk of being called tedious I remember it as being a 15 second debut . Keith Lodge will confirm one way or t'other .
he was a striker,in youth set up, broke his leg and out for a year, think he lost any pace he had and reinvented himself as a passing midfielder, after breaking his leg he never made one tackle again, was king of the floated side foot pass to the wing ,had a decent strike on him and scored a few long shots, but we had Blackburns pants down at 700,000, was subject of boo boys at times, for perceived lack of getting stuck in, but once youve broke your leg, expect you watch yourself
Times like this that you wish you had saved the press cutting but hey ho . Anybody out there that can ask KL ?
Blimey! Moore was a substitute and only played in the closing stages. My memory's got more holes in it than Swiss cheese! Nice find, though, mate.
There's plenty more where that came from. I've got a dozen scrap books. I'm a bit pissed off that the sellotape is failing though. It should last more than 35 years!
