Another trip in the Barnsley fc time machine this time to season 1980/81 a promotion winning season also the Reds had a tremendous run in the FA cup. The footage starts with short highlights from a league cup 3rd round tie against Cardiff City then the main feature. The YTV cameras came to Oakwell to record The Big Game. Millwall 18th October 1980 and a 2-0 win for the reds. The tape also includes goals from the following games; Plymoth away 25th October 1980 Exeter away 8th November 1980 Portsmouth away 15th November 1980 Rotherham away FA cup 2nd round 13th December 1980 Fulham away 16th January 1981 Enfield away FA cup 4th round replay at White Hart Lane. Towards the end of the tape the footage stutters a little. Stick with it its worth it.
Great stuff. Thanks for that, brings back some happy memories does that, especially the Plymouth game. I was somewhere amongst those mental celebrations behind that goal lol.
Thanks for that. Gutted they didn't capture what in my eyes is the best Barnsley goal I've ever seen. Banksy's winning goal in the opening clip against Cardiff. Thankfully I didn't leave the ground after Cardiff equalised. Lots did..
Great seeing all these clips again but here's a top tip. When you post them don't tell us that it was a 2-0 win for the Reds or whatever. I like watching highlights, whether old or new, without knowing the score. Obviously some matches, even 40 years ago, stick in the memory but Barnsley v Millwall 1980 isn't one of them
Thanks for posting that, mate. It brought back some happy memories. I seem to think the wins at Plymouth, Portsmouth & Exeter followed each other every other week. Travelling up and down the country, standing on open to the elements terracing, watching the best Barnsley team I've ever seen. Such happy memories. Thank you.
Fantastic, first time I've seen that since 1981. I was at White Hart Lane that night but not in the Barnsley end.... Scared sh*tless most of the time and unable to celebrate....
Very likeable is Trevor. I like the puzzled look on his face every time Martin Tyler asks him a question, like he's trying to work out a hard sum.
Agree: absolute stonker from Banger. One of the many goals from that era that will never fade from my memory.
Me too, 11 year old went with dad in car and had to sit in the big stand where cameras were, fish and chips on the way home, think we got home just in time for dad to go to work at 5am
I was living near Salisbury for the first half of that season so got to see away days like Exeter and Portsmouth without too much travelling. It was certainly good to be a Barnsley fan that year - promotion from the Third Division topped it off nicely. I fully expect us to do the same thing again this May.
We were in the wrong end aswell. The cops did take us out after 20 mins or so and marched us round to the away end. The Fulham away game was probably my second favourite ever away game, Glynn Riley in the goals, 3:1 win and top of the league. Man utd away in the fa cup 1998 in case you're wondering
I wanted Trevor Aylott to see this so asked a few who might have contact with him and Matt Goodwin did and posted this the other day.
My favourite season ever following the Reds, went to 55 out of 58 games all told including the run of wins on the South Coast. Great footage and even better memories, cheers pal.
We went on the special, which took the milk train route home - got in about half 3, with a mock O-Level that morning (maths, I think) Mad walk back to the station from WHL - it was kicking off everywhere.
