OH YES born in barnsley general , lived in monk bretton and lunwood went to grange gate school but moved away when i was 11, always been a true barnsley fan,,NEVER anyone else no way
Always supported the Super Reds. Went to Grove Street, played football at play time imagining I was playing on the hallowed turf just over the road. Had trials at loads of clubs up to leaving school but only ever wanted to be at Oakwell. Played to reserve team level for the Reds but got released. Had some offers from other clubs but so gutted I just didn’t have the heart. I have given up hope now of ever playing for the Reds(mind you I am 55 now) YOU REDS!
I'm assuming you must have shared a field with some of the first team from time to time then. Cooper Currie, Futcher, Lowndes era?
I grew up supporting De Graafschap, because that's from the city I grew up in. I probably never even heard of Barnsley until I started playing the Championship Manager games just over twenty years ago. And even then I probably wasn't really aware of the club. When we moved to Barnsley it slowly started to come and a bit over three years ago we went to a few games. Now we're in our third season as season ticket holders. It's been quite an adventure so far!
My first game I saw that I can remember was the 77 cup final - my granddad liked United so I thought I'd support Liverpool that day. Liverpool lost but a few days later they played in the European Cup final which they won. I started taking interest in their results. My first live game was at Oakwell in 78/79 season - that got me hooked on the club. Loved it - the atmosphere , the smells ( Bovril , smoke) , first time I really heard proper swearing . From that season onwards Barnsley were my team although I did still followed Liverpool's results. Might explain my current place of residence.
