Glasgow's clubs - Rangers - bigoted Protestants. Celtic- bigoted Catholics of mainly Irish extract. Queens Park - plod along as amateurs in a professional world. Patrick Thistle pick up the few non bigots, as Clyde have been banished to a New Town and dear old Third Lanark have gone bust.
Not a huge fan of Brendan but he did a great job with Celtic, won lots of pots and now accepted a new challenge, in a bigger league for more money. Good luck to the bloke.
Oh dear its the Daily Mail. An interesting view but pretty inaccurate. Can’t speak for Rangers but in the 30 years i’ve been travelling up to watch Celtic games (10 of those with S Yorkshire branches) I’ve come to the conclusion that Celtic = Catholic support is lazy ********. I’m not saying for a moment that Celtic don’t have a huge amount of fans who identify with the Irish/ anti establishment/ left wing ‘causes’ stuff but by no means is this reflective of the whole support. When I travelled up with S Yorks Celts (based in She**ield) of the 100 or so who travelled, more than half were not catholic (not that it mattered), 80% were English born with the other 20% being Scottish or Irish. About 20 were ex army with the RGJ being particularly well represented for some reason ( but no one from the Black Watch! Or the Paras!) Since travelling up with supporters clubs around Catterick/Darlington/Boro, the proportion of military has gone up to around 50%. - mostly Scott’s but with a couple of Gurkas!! Nothing scientific in these figures - just observations over 30 years. Don’t become lazy with stereotypes. The world is more complex than that.
I lived in Glasgow from 1955 to 1961, my observations were from those days. Nothing I've heard from my Scottish friends indicates that things have changed. When I watched PT in the 50s the gates were similar to Barnsley's. Sadly they attracted half that number in their last year's in the Premiership.
Being honest the only time I've been truly afraid at a football match was before the European Cup Semi Final between Leeds and Celtic at Elland Road. I had been invited by one of my suppliers, so I didn't support either team. All the local pubs in and around the ground were shut and had been boarded up on the orders of the police. Quite a number of Hoops fans were absolutely pis*ed out of their minds. As we walked towards the Stand, scuffles broke out between Leeds and Celtic fans and the latter were taking wads of tickets off the spivs and giving them to their supporters who hadn't got a ticket. You could feel the tension in the air and when Celtic grabbed the only goal of the game, it sounded like steam from a pressure cooker being released. Never ever been so relieved to get out of a football stadium in my life. Offered a ticket for the return leg in Glasgow but I politely declined.
