Isn't it the opposite? 'welcome' is using the club as a collective, so the corresponding term is "Barnsley are in second place". "Barnsley is in second place" would be using a singular noun, so would correspond to "welcomes".

What happened to the new sign on the Ponty? They had submitted the plans to BMBC.

I'd go with welcomes and scrap the dots although they should be there.
I shall now go and find something to be retentive about. :)

I have a similar discussion with my wife about "none...."
"None of us are stupid" or "none of us is stupid."
Grammatically correct is the latter, i.e. "not one of us is stupid". You would say "one of us is stupid" so equally you'd say "not one of us is ..." but I admit it does sound odd to say "is".
    Language is strange and entertaining.

Probably right, but I would always say "Barnsley are at home" or "Barnsley are at Southend", whereas Americans would say "New England is at Green Bay". Actually, now that I think about it, they would also say "The Patriots are at Green Bay" so God knows. However, I would always say "welcomes" over "welcome" in response to the OP.

Reight, I is off to make a drink.

Depends on whether you see Barnsley FC as singular or plural..... As there's only 1 Barnsley FC, I have no issue. @Stahlrost is right about the full stop, however.

Barnsley FC is a singularity. Once it has a hold on you, there's no getting away.

At the risk of making you an alcoholic...

I would always say "Barnsley are at home" or "Barnsley are at Southend", but the Barnsley there is a short form of Barnsley FC - so I would always say "Barnsley FC are ..."

However, I would of course say "Barnsley is a shithole", when talking about the town, for example.

I still think "New England is at Green Bay" sounds very wrong.

I also think welcome sounds better.

Which is why, in my opinion, the sign should be a simple: Welcome to Oakwell or Welcome to Barnsley F. C.

I'd say it was correct. Would you have ssid Barnsley win with 10 men or Barnsley wins with 10 men., Barnsley FC are currently in 2nd place or Barnsley FC is currently in 2nd place. I think it's the former in both instances.

Agree with that. Although, personally, I'd drop all the full stops - Barnsley FC
But Barnsley F.C. is infinitely preferable to Barnsley F.C which is just daft.

It's a bit strange that they use Barnsley FC on all their online media including their Twitter account but then put a random dot in the signs on the stadium.

    Personally I'd just have
    Welcome to Oakwell
    The home of Barnsley Fc
