Very flat for an away day and game of such importance. A few young lads tried to get it going, but the vast majority sat quietly throughout, until we scored. Just makes you realise how much of part alcohol has when it comes to noise at football matches. Glad the televised games are done with now, although to be fair, we've not conceded a single goal in the last 3 on telly. As an aside, I see some people picking at today's performance, which wasn't great, and neither was the pitch. We were made to work very hard for that win, but for the sky bloke to say we were outplayed is a bit rich. Here are the stats. They don't reflect badly.
I thought the atmosphere was pretty good for most of the game, although I was to the right if the net where most of the noise was coming from. Surprised more fans didn't make the trip down but I suppose it's the 3rd away trip in a row we've been on TV plus the early kick off.
Not a bad following I didn't think given the kick off time. Atmosphere decent to the right side of the stand but very quiet otherwise. With a larger following that group wouldn't have been able to stand together so the noise levels would have been much worse.
The stats are the stats. Top one says walsall 0. That's all that matters. We weren't outplayed. Walsall defended in deep and broke on us.
Don't get me wrong. Walsall played ok, and had the better opportunities, but I don't like the term "outplayed". It's too wide ranging, and it's not something I saw today. Walsall are fighting for their lives, and our lack of composure and individual errors didn't help us, but we finished the game stronger, and got the winner. Not many teams have done what I'd class as outplaying us this season. Sunderland for about 30 minutes and Shrewsbury for the first half, and bits and bobs of games. Walsall certainly didn't today. They were a slightly less defensive version of Wycombe at their place. Everyone behind the ball, nick it and get it forward with pace.
I can honestly say I didn't hear a single song/chant from the Walsall fans all game. All the singing came from the Travelling Reds. Respect!
Walsall are scrapping to stay up. They could take points off Doncaster away next week and Peterborough at the Bescot in their next to last game. We got out of jail today right enough, but for me, that just goes to prove, that even if we are not at the top of our usual game, we can still grind out a result. We may well reflect on today's game at the end of the season and flag it up as the one result that we didn't really deserve, but was the shot in the arm we needed to consolidate our position in the automatic promotion places.
Totally agree. They did a weird chat not long after we cleared off the line. That’s the only time they made themselves heard all game. Odd ground.
