It features three photos from the 1973/74 season. We had a young, skilful team (Chambers, Yates, Butler, Millar, Doyle-R.I.P.) that played some wonderful football, despite receiving no protection from thuggish, talentless opposition defenders by referees, which was the norm, sadly, in those days. One photo features my third all-time favourite Barnsley player Mick Butler (behind Ronnie Glavin & Pat Howard). On another, you can see the infamous waist of Brian Mahoney! A big Thank You to the folk on that site from this old codger. https://twitter.com/bfc_memories?lang=en
John Manning in shot as well, Lil. He'd been a good player and did well for us. A somewhat hard player as well, I recall. In terms of pure finishing ability and the uncoachable quality of being able to score goals, especially in that era and on those pitches, Mick Butler's as good as anyone I've seen at the Well in over 50 years.
Did Mick work in a local Pit and play for local weekend team, before signing for Barnsley,or am I mixing him up with someone else?
I believe he was an electrician at Dodworth pit, whilst playing for Worsbrough Bridge. A job he continued with after making his debut during the 1972/73 season. He finished that campaign with nine goals in about sixteen games, before turning pro during the close season of 1973.
Thank you ,it was a nice team to watch if my memory serves me right, I liked Les Lea as well from that period. I follow the BFC Memories site on Twitter, it's amazing the work they do.
I wonder how much of the reported £20,000 fee for him and Frank Sharp was for Frank Sharp! No disrespect, but.......
As you’d expect given my name on here, Mick Butler is an all time favourite of mine. Top drawer finisher and a tough cookie despite his slender frame. The game was brutal in those days and he took some heavy batterings from some agricultural centre halves. Think he broke a leg twice in one season if I remember correctly? The Sun ran a story on him showing all the injuries he’d suffered!
I used to work with a nurse at Barnsley Hospital called June Waite, she was Sister in A&E, and I'm sure she was Pat Howard's sister. She's long since retired, and had a look of Barbara Windsor's Carry on Nurse character.
Stop messin' about! June is bottom right on the photo. A lovely nurse. Not sure of the year, probably mid to late 80s. I didn't start my training until. 1992 and don't recognise some off here, although others are still working at Barnsley.
