In all fairness SD, if that situation happens at any Club, apart from matching any offer that the rival Club makes, there's absolutely nothing the Club who holds the registration of any player can do about it. I bet if you sat Conor down and asked him, if he could have got the same money at Oakwell as he's on now, you might be pleasantly surprised at his answer. Expectation and admiration wise, his life would be far easier than it is now believe me. He's a small fish in a big pond at Villa Park.
Wasting your time CR. He doesn't want to entertain any supportive thoughts for the football club or its owners. Like several others, nothings ever good enough. Must be some pretty successful people post on here for them to have such high standards and expectations of others.
In my opinion We are the modern day crew Alexander... Producing talent and selling them on... Brilliant for the owners pleasing on the eye for the supporters but and it's a big But.... Quite happy treading water .. Going round in circles
It's what we've always done. I've been going 40 years and we've never kept our best players, just like the majority of other clubs really. Those days of Crewe regularly doing that were 20 years ago. We're a better club than Crewe. We have better support, and yes we will still sell our players, but it won't be something we do in isolation.
You said that we didn't have Championship quality and never will unless we buy it. I was simply pointing out that we HAVE bought Championship quality players in significant numbers.
When I started supporting the Reds in 1987, where I worked, the Chief Personnel Officer and the Director both Barnsley born and bred, were also regular attendees at Oakwell. One day, I happened to be at the same table as them in the Canteen. I was enthusing about the Clubs hopes for the future, when the Director said " bear in mind, that because of our resources , Barnsley are recognised as a selling Club. Unfortunately, unless something happens to change that, that's how it will always be." Still see both of them in the East Stand on match days. Like me, having had a chat, both are optimistic that that mindset might just change in the future under this new regime. As Fitzy rightly says though, for whatever reason, we are always going to be selling our players. My hope for the coming seasons, is that the players we bring in to replace any we let go, are better.
Ultimately, if we are promoted we will have been good enough. If we're not we won't. But as we haven't yet reached the ultimate, and either result is entirely possible, it's too early to make such a call
The bare facts of the matter are that our club has ALWAYS sold it's best players, especially when in the second tier. It's the only way we are able to compete at that level. Unless the current owners differ from what they've said they intend to do that is likely to remain the case. I'm constantly amazed at the number of folk who can't grasp that you can't compete on a consistent basis in the Championship on crowds of 10 to 15000 without selling your assets on a regular basis or having extremely generous owners.
I think the players are good enough. Just that there aren’t enough of them. We need a bigger first team squad to cover injuries.
Even in league 1 you should try and have two players in each position whether that's first team regulars or interspersed with the under 23's and the academy. That avoids having to play the likes of Bahre as a second striker. When Kieffer Moore got injured even without new signings we should have had a like for like replacement ready to come in from the under 23's or academy. The biggest problem to my mind is we've stuck square pegs in round holes.
I think that is some people's gripe mate. I can remember you and me discussing the takeover. I felt desperate for someone to come and get it done, and you were more cautious, and rightly so. I think the way things have gone suits us both, but regardless of what they said at the very offset, I think some aren't happy that they haven't splurged money. Let's face it, some will never be happy with anything, but the rest of us owe jt to them to crack on with the job rather than judging too early.
Strikes me the issue is the fact that some people can’t get past the owners are very wealthy people. Until that sinks in and is understood it will always be raised about lack of this and that.
Ommited to mention, that our former Director grew up in Worsborough Dale and was very friendly with the young Mick McCarthy. Saying what he did, about us being a selling Club, wasn't based on hearsay, as if I recall correctly, he had trials at Oakwell and played some reserve games for the Club as A. Trialist. His parents wanted him to get a " proper job" to maximise his scholastic talents, so he didn't go on accept a contract to enable him to play for our first team. I believe he was instrumental in endorsing a request that Mick McCarthy should to be given his chance at the Club, as he'd seen him play a few times in local football.
