Former Celtic player and manager Billy McNeill, has passed at the age of seventy nine. He was the the first British player to ever lift the European Cup. Unfortunately he had suffered from dementia since 2010 and latterly he was unable to speak. He died surrounded by his loving family and friends.
I was lucky enough to meet Billy McNeill when i was having a tour of Maine Rd. i was doing a project on Football Stadia, and he was Man City manager at the time. He stopped and chatted for a while, and asked where i was from. When i said “Barnsley’ he shot off into the changing rooms, and brought Mick McCarthy out. So we all had a chat, and Mick McCarthy offered me and my Mum a lift home to Barnsley. Really happy memory for me. RIP Billy.
A sad day. A true legend in the proper sense of the word and an old school gentleman to boot. A great not only of Glasgow and Scottish football but of British and European football. Hail Cesar!
Interesting fact on Billy He was the son of a British Soldier, wonder how that sits with the small minority of anti British Army bigots that attaches itself to Celtic ?
How crazy is football at times. Celtic Park yesterday in mourning of McNeill who wore the number 5 for them in the famous 67 European triumph. Yesterday’s game Celtic won 1-0 where their number 5 scored the only goal, in the 67th minute. Had to be didn’t it.
