Approx 6.00pm in the Jones Jet Garage car park next to Oakwell, 26th April 1997, having just seen Barnsley FC promoted to the Premier League. Celebrating with my mate Curtis. And what a night in town that was later. 22 years old at the time the pair of us. It seems like yesterday, then you look at the two of us, and the cars, and realise 22 years have passed by. The car park and garage have both gone. Football has changed beyond recognition too. We gave the Premier League a bloody nose at the time by gatecrashing. 4 years later we had dropped 2 divisions and gone into administration because the bank would not extend the overdraft (from something like £2.5 to £3 million I think). Now, if you are relegated from the Premier League after 1 season, you receive £100+million. It's killing it as a truly magical sport, thankfully we have some wonderful memories. It was more fun and enjoyable getting into the Premier League than being there. Times have been tough for much of the last 19 years, and I've fallen out of love with football in general, but supporting Barnsley requires stoicism, realism and patience. And every so often, we do something quite glorious. Beating Liverpool, Chelsea. Being bottom of the third division on boxing day and getting promoted six months later as happened in 2015/16. Again, we are on the verge of something wonderful, everything crossed we can secure promotion this season. It's why I laugh at those supporters moaning that their club are going to only finish 5th or 6th in the Premier League and miss out on a Champions League place. They haven't got a bloody clue. Love Barnsley. Hate football.
Brilliant post and great pic.I'm gonna try and find my picture in front of a Tony Blair image of him in a barnsley shirt with the caption marching to the premiership. Great days
Fantastic post that sums up my feelings on the game in general. Superb stuff mate. I’m actually struggling to remember where the Jet garage was (it’s an age thing lol). Thinking it was facing bottom of Oakwell Lane.....?
Great post. Used that garage regularly when we were first married and lived near the Grove Street school. Seems like only yesterday. I couldn't begin to guess where the time has gone, or my hair for that matter - although supporting the Reds probably accounts for some of it (on both fronts)
