think it was the last time we went into the last game with an outside chance of being champions, we were already promoted after beating rotherham midweek but must beat newport by about 4 goals and hope rotherham lose, i think we did go 4 up but they won anyway, seems a lifetime ago! no matter what anyone says, the clarke/hunter era was the best for me before most my mates fecked off and started watching wendys! 4-1 us setdy n luton sneak a late win and stendel manager of the year, doubt luton can claim it
We don’t live in the 1800s though so 38 years, one would hope, is nowhere near a lifetime. It would be a very good life time for a dog though.
I was there with my then fiancée. After the game, we went to her family's caravan on the East Coast. We had Radio Sheffield on and they didn't mention our promotion once. All they talked about was Sheffield United being relegated that day to the old Fourth Division. It was hilarious.
Was there but no recollection whatsoever: can remember the 79 game v grimsby though like it was yesterday.
I was there, corner of Ponty. Went to the Rotherham match midweek, then the Newport match on the Saturday. We did our bit in a complete performance but it just wasn't enough. Lasting memories (I was 15) are of a very old man with a raincoat and a Newport County bag / satchel stood behind me, oblivious to the fact he was in the wrong end, and of me and my mate running onto the pitch (and getting trampled) in the days when it was considered OK to do so. At the end may I add, NOT during the game. The week after, my Barnsley relatives posted me a copy of 'Normans Conquest' special supplement from the Chron. Long since lost :-( Happy days.
I was there and what a great team we had and the football was sublime. Went on to make their mark in the old second division next few seasons as well. How we didn’t beat Rotherham to be champions is a mystery as although they were a very good team they weren’t anywhere near our team at that time .
