    But why do they have to be from a lower league all time. I get the young. Why couldn't we have signed martin waghorn two years ago for one million instead of notorious poor payers Ipswich who then sold him for six million a year later. Instead we signed ugbo.

    It’s almost like this is what we’ve all been telling you the plan is for months now, but you just sit there with your fingers in your ears going “lalalalalalalala Mr Lee Billionaire Cheque Book our rich owners can afford anything”

    Repeat after me: “the wealth of the owners is not the same as the wealth of the club”

    Got it yet? We recruit within our means, or there is no club. It’s as simple as that.

    Realise there's backlash here because of the OP but it's a good point, isn't it? We've been good at identifying and recruiting players capable of taking us out of League One but we've struggled a little bit, so far, to recruit players that can hit the ground running in the championship. We've had players that have done well with us in league one who has then stepped up to the Championship. How will we get the players to replace first teamers that will inevitably leave in the close season who are ready for the championship? Recruit from the top end of league one? Foreign leagues? I'm sure there is a strategy in place and it will be interesting to see that and hopefully, we have learnt from past mistakes in this situation.

    BTW, I don't expect Paul Conway to give any of this away in such interviews. He's said before they have strategies that give the club an advantage in recruitment and that they aren't going to give these away to the other clubs we will compete with. We just need to be patient and see what happens.

    Yids hit the ground running. As did Ryan Kent. And Bradshaw was a high flying League One signing who we turned in to a £1.5 million player based on his performances in the Championship. Equally Potts had one full season in the Championship with us and four months in League One, making him a £2 million signing worthy of Preston's money. You can throw Angus McDonald in as well who returned a profit. Janko and Armstrong other promising signings that are still at Championship level now.

    Our recruitment strategy isn't flawed at this level we now find ourselves in. What didn't work out for us last time was how quickly the success came, not having players on the right length of contracts, and choosing the path of losing four or five of our star players rather than taking the risk of offering them big money straight after promotion. The skill is complimenting the promotion squad with four or five good signings rather than complete upheaval. We tried to replace a whole team in one sweep and you just can't get away with that. Hopefully the owners have learnt their lesson.

    Opinions. I thought more times than not he was our biggest threat and allowed us to play the way we did that season. His decision making was awful, but the speed he allowed us to get up the pitch was a key part to some of our performances.

    We missed him the following season. Or missed a player of that ilk should I say.

    After reading this thread - you would think most on here that post are goldfish with a memory span of a few seconds.

    And some saying I’ve said this before about Conways comments re: recruitment and the Championship.

    2) He said these things yesterday

    Which if you’ve notice completely changes the tone of the thread.
    The sheep drop off the bandwagon.

    The only way I can see of squaring the circle is if these recruited young players are already at a standard in which they can hit the ground running in the Championship.
    Only problem with that - is that these types is players usually cost £££millions.
    So I can’t see that happening.
    It’s going to be very interesting to see how things pan out over the summer.

    That's what I remember of Kent he would often take us 30/40 yards up the pitch, his end product was poor but he certainly did a job in that side.

    It is a good post YN and raises a very valid question. At the moment I don’t know the answer because I’m not completely clear on the owners’ intentions with our football club.

    I’m not sure if the current model can be converted in the way is suggested by ratcheting it up a level. I guess we have to wait and see.

    There is also a massive issue with retention rather than recruitment in the model, and the acid test will be Pinnock whose contract expires 2020. Without the ability to retain I would argue the current model does not work. But retention is where the cost is

    Do we manage to sign him up to a new deal (big cost, big risk) so that he can develop into a £10m championship centre back or do we just flog him for £5m this summer (low cost, low risk) ?

    My business head says that the latter model is more financially sound and prudent and probably better. However such an approach is totally deflating and will leave us in a yo-yo between league one and the championship.

    Hardly diluting my argument if the challenge was about our ability to recruit in the Championship and I sight two players that will be playing that level next season. Never said I rated Angus, just that we made money on him and sold him to someone in the same division. A division we've just spent 46 games trying to get back in to.

    Angus was good when he 1st came and partnerd Roberts he was poor the season after but most of the team were. His bfc career ended at half time when we were getting pumped by reading never seen again after that wish I was a fly in that dressing room at half time.
