So there would be no need for cyclist insurance. I've known plenty of people involving in car accidents. I've known cyclists get hit by cars - been hit myself. Never known anyone get hit by a cyclist though.

I do think cyclists should be responsible for any damage they cause.

What about mobility scooters? Where should they go and should they be insured?

If the pedestrian is at fault the cyclist wouldn't be liable regardless of the injuries.

I never said it should be law for cyclist's to have insurance, you asked " why would a cyclist need insurance" and I pointed out to cover any cost of damaged, if " at fault" caused to another vehicle/ person (s) Scooters are to help people with limited mobility right? So they can go where they want, ( to a certain degree) But I think you already knew that, just being a tad pedantic aey mate

I never mentioned it being "law".

Just wondering if scooters are pedestrians or vehicles. I don't think they can go anywhere.

A pedestrian getting hit by a cyclist on a pavement would never be at fault as bikes are classed under UK law as road vehicles therefore it’s illegal to ride one on the pavement.

If a cyclist is riding on the pavement at 20mph and hits a pedestrian then they are complete morons and I hope they are severely punished. Can't remember it happening though. I assume there are isolated cases out there but none I am aware of.

Got hit by a cyclist 2 months after picking this car up, one of a group of 8 pretending to be in the peloton, I was overtaking in the opposite side of the road when he swerved across to overtake another rider and bounced off my front wing. Said the wind blew him across and drivers dont appreciate how hard it is. I paid repair bill

It’s a case of dodgem every day in Sheffield. They seem to think they have a Devine right to cycle on a pavement and **** everyone else.

Do you think, regardless of speed a cyclist should be on a pavement?

I've nearly hit a couple of pedestrians on my bike... But because they crossed the road and didn't look. Would not have been my fault, but could guarantee that if I did hit them that people who didn't see it would be quick to blame the guy on the bike.

This is the one that sticks in my mind. Isolated case, unfortunately showed no remorse and not severely punished (imo). Not on the pavement but riding recklessly nevertheless:

No. Although at some junctions I will get off and walk with my bike on the pavement.

Yep. I nearly hit a pedestrian last summer. He was looking at the oncoming traffic and because the road behind him was empty he assumed it was clear and just stepped out. I had to swerve and nearly came off.

Why was the pedestrian at fault?

Yep, but as cyclists don't have registration plates and the name and address and mobile number he gave me were all false ( went to the house when discovered the mobile wasn't him) I’d no choice. They were riding 3 abreast which he justified as something he called owning the lane which was a deliberate strategy employed by the group to limit overtakes to the opposite carriageway, 2 miles of frustrated traffic at the back of em and no way round, when I did overtake he never looked just moved across into my lane but it was all my fault. In my view all cyclists should have to pass a similar test to the C B T moped riders take, they should have some form of registration mark and have insurance. As it stands its all too easy for Derek from accounts to pull on his silly lycra outfit and pretend its le tour with his mates. Its simply not safe.

You're right it's not safe. For the cyclists. Mainly due to moronic drivers. This is an Australian article but I'd be surprised if it's any different in this country.
