Caught me off guard that... Emotional... So nice to see Bet there's lots on here who'd give the world to be able to hug their dad again.... 5 years this August mine went back to spirit bless him...
I’ll be honest I shed a tear. Top lad is Henderson, taken way too much undeserved stick over the years & on here as well. Proven himself as a quality player who keeps improving & now he’s lifted the biggest prize in club football. I’d have him as England captain every day of the week over Kane but as we saw with Beckham the captaincy’s more about having a big name than a leader
Imo Beckham was a fantastic captain. He did lead the team to some great results. 5-1 vs Germany and that freekick vs Greece to qualify amongst many others.
His Dad Brian has been suffering from throat Cancer, so I bet Jordon is relieved that he has lived to see what he said he would do aged 10. His Dad took him to the Euro final and as they lifted the Cup he said to him that he would do that one day. His Dad didn't take it seriously because having joined his local team Sunderland at eight years old, Brian knew that would never happen. What a joyous moment. A dream come true, for both of them.
I thought barring the odd result the team massively underperformed & was incorrectly built round Beckham during his time as captain. He was never captain material in my opinion, I don’t think he was ever a candidate to be captain at Man Utd under Fergie either, he picked loads over him as his captains instead. Just seemed a cynical ploy by England to maximise brand Beckham by giving the armband when there were so many more natural leaders like Gerrard, Terry, Rio, G. Neville, Lampard around at the same time
Touching video but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here eh? Henderson is a pretty average player in my opinion and if you look at the list of captains who have lifted the trophy in the last say 20 years, he doesn’t really compare to any of them.
I used to work with his (Jordan) mam. She tells a very different story about his relationship with his dad! It puts a very different spin on both him and his dad as to the kind of men they are! Thats not for an open forum though and I am sure they have a very different story to tell!
My Dad's the man who took me to my first game at Oakwell and we have bonded over BFC more than anything else. It's our thing and what we talk about immediately any time we speak. I don't know how I'll cope without him when he goes but the BFC memories will help me so much
Never saw any evidence of him been a great leader. A team with very little passion who were regularly criticised for underperforming & going missing when it mattered
Nah that’s not right, what about that free kick against Greece? Dragged us through qualifying. An arse maybe but put in a shift on the pitch
25 years this year since my rock left this world. So many times I wish the clock could be rolled back. His brick is in the remembrance wall. He saw me win races and footy cups, not to this level, but hopefully made him proud. He took me to my first t'well match and so many afterwards. He cycled miles to the ground to watch them from Wath after a shift in the brewery. But never saw us in the top league, very sad. Mr Conway, this is what our club is about, but I think you are smart enough to know that ❤️
I’m not disputing his free kick taking ability he was brilliant at them but he wasn’t a leader, not by any stretch of the imagination. The England squad was an absolute shambles whilst he was captain, cliques throughout the squad, Man Utd players only sat with each other, Chelsea only with each other, Liverpool only with each other etc. It was out of control, 2006 World Cup with all the families in Germany, getting battered in nightclubs, selling stories to papers, allegedly families scrapping & sleeping with other players’ family members. Somehow under his captaincy one of his boyhood mates Scholes retired from England duty in the middle of his prime, how on earth did that happen? I’m not blaming Beckham for all this, Sven carries a lot of the blame for the shenanigans as well. But I never understand how people talk about scoring a free kick against Greece more than they talk about him getting sent off against the Argies in 98 or jumping out of that 50-50 in the build up to Brazil’s equaliser in 2002 or the month long build up to the 2006 World Cup with his ‘will he won’t he’ play due to his metatarsal injury & then him declaring himself fit, starting every game & been absolutely useless throughout because he was clearly unfit. We wasted our golden generation by making it team Beckham in my opinion. Had some of the best players in the world yet they played out of position to accommodate Beckham, had some of the best captains in the world in Gerrard & Terry yet a guy who was never a contender to captain his club captained us, brilliant penalty takers for their clubs yet Beckham who never took them for his club was taking them. It was barmy.
I take it that your Mrs has a poster of him in the bedroom! Beckham was a childish spoilt brat who was encouraged to be like that by the ogre Ferguson. I hated Beckham. But then he changed completely and became a role model and correctly an icon in the game. The match against Greece was not just about the free kick. Beckham was all over the pitch that day and almost single handedly got us into the 2002 World Cup finals where England were beaten by a fluke goal in the quarters. I loved Beckham.
