VAR ruining the game...

Never thought I would see the day when the referee had to run to the touchline and watch replayed incidents on television before making a decision.

 

Thought is was only going to be for hand ball in the box or dubious line decisions like was it in or out. But it is now being used for every goal mouth incident.
Absolute joke.

 

I like it.
It adds to the suspense.
And importantly it gets the decisions right.

 

maybe we shoulda had VAR in the tunnel the day Barton kicked off.

 

It’s killing the game. Absolutely crap. Unless they can refine it, I can see lots of fans walking away from this rubbish

 

lol.... its only just being used..... a long way to go before you can make such statements. I think it will be a good thing once all the creases are ironed out. It work totally well in Rugby, cricket and tennis . I cannot see it doing harm once its been sorted out.

I've been a huge proponent of it but it does seem to be interfering with the spontaneity of the game. You feel like it's impossible to celebrate a goal as it's repeatedly being referred to VAR. The rush of adrenaline when the ball hits the net is being replaced with the feeling of let's wait to see if it's referred and by the time the decision is made the moment has gone.
I still think there are big advantages to it but there are some major teething problems to be ironed out.

The disgraceful behaviour of the Cameroon team and the sub standard ref ruined the game today.

First time I've ever agreed with Nudger. But yes, I also think it helps improve decisions and adds a bit of drama.

 

First time I've agreed with Nudger too. It gets the big decisions right - so you can't cheat....and the suspense is good....and if it goes into the Premiership there might be a time when it slows things down until the players get used to it and change their behaviour

 

Having been at a game ruined by VAR I reckon it should be ditched. I have no confidence that the footballing authorities can introduce it in a sensible way. Two massive problems are :
- linesmen not flagging obvious offsides and leaving it to VAR - the attacking side then gets a corner and scores - VAR not applicable from previous phase.
- team scores and the crowd learn not to celebrate, just to wait for VAR.

It should be made clearer that the referee in the VAR review room trumps the on-field referee. Then we can have a system where the footage is simultaneously relayed to the crowd and the VAR referee's comments and adjudication are available for all to hear. Cricket successfully utilises this system without question by the participants. The need for VAR arises from unfair criticism of referees over the years using multiple camera angles to which the men in the middle don't have access. If we don't want VAR then stop any unfair analysis of decisions by MOTD, Sky and the rest.

While we are about it, we should scrap the ridiculous position that disciplinary matters on-field can't be reviewed if the referee is deemed to have dealt with them. If more information is available to the authorities than the referee could have had during the match it should be used and miscreants punished.

 

The difference being that rugby, cricket and tennis are all stop-start games, whilst football is a game that could and should flow. Goal-line technology is great, it's foolproof and virtually instant, but VAR is still subject to scrutiny and the scrutineers can and do still get the decisions wrong; VAR just disrupts the flow of the game. I may be accused of being a dinosaur, but my view is that if it isn't broken don't try to fix it. How long will it be before VAR is sponsored by a betting company, or televised matches have a convenient advertisement break whilst VAR is being consulted?

 

Incorrect decisions are part of football. That’s always how it’s going to be, with or without VAR. It’s a subjective game: often there is no right answer, as is proven by the fact that pundits talk about referees’ decisions for hours on end sometimes without coming to any real agreement.

Attempting to rule out the human error is silly. It’s all part of the reason football is exciting. It can be extremely annoying when it goes against you, but the spontaneity and certainty that results from decisions being made in real time is absolutely irreplaceable. And it creates drama and talking points! For me, VAR should be scrapped and everyone should accept that football is a lot more entertaining without it.
