Agree RS. Other tips I was given, is don't cross your legs, either at the knee or ankles and to help avoid deep vein thrombosis, wear elasticated flight socks. Also to combat pressure on your eardrums on take off and landing, suck a boiled scoff. Didn't know until yesterday, that when you fly, apparently your blood thins out. As a precaution therefore, anyone already taking blood thinning medication, should contact their GP for reassuring advice before the flight.
Wear smart but baggy and comfortable clothes, in case there's an opportunity for a free upgrade. They won't put you in first/business class if you're wearing tracky bottoms and a vest, no matter how empty it is. If you can afford it, upgrade to the one below business class, at least (it's called Economy Plus, Extra Legroom, something like that) It's normally about 150 quid, but it's very worth it. Then again, you might be able to get a free upgrade if it's a quiet plane.
This is what I do also. I love working out where we are, if there are any stadiums to see etc, as well as all the other features. I usually check the flight route on Flightradar 24 and book a seat on the plane according to which side of the plane may offer views of most interest. If travelling to North America, I always book a seat on the right hand side of the plane, heading out, so I can see stuff other than sea! That said, a flight to Cuba is going to be one long view of the Atlantic Ocean, so maybe a middle seat is more sensible. My Dad often told the tale of a flight he and my Mum did in the early 70s, back when flying was alot more unusual. They were flying to South Africa, and my Dad had nodded off, only to be woken by my Mum excitedly pointing out the Sahara Desert. My Dad was less than impressed. "You've woken me up to show me the biggest load of f#ck all there is on earth!"
Had a holiday in Vietnam last winter which involved a 7 hour flight to Dubai and then a 7 hour flight to Vietnam. Going there was terrible but coming back was worse because i was on my own. Tried to sleep through most of it and the in-flight movies helped though, cracking service that by Emirates.
iPad or other tablet device and download loads of films/tv shows and just binge those and the time will fly buy. Also invest in some good noise cancelling headphones that are comfy to drown out the noise of any screaming kids or drunken idiots. Final thing is if you are flying for so long a powerbank may be useful incase the iPad runs low on battery during the flight
last few I went on didnt but then again they were cheap budget airlines and only very short flights under 2 hour.
All of the above are very useful tips but i always fail to follow any of them despite my best intentions. The best long-haul flights to be on are night time ones so at least you can try and lessen the boredom through sleep. Unfortunately I become bored immediately after boarding a plane and I don't sleep much at the best of times. As a consequence i tend to drink more than i had planned as this does help for me and to be fair i havn't suffered for it after a flight as of yet. Roll on Pattaya
9hrs isn't that bad to be honest, but it could feel a long time depending on when you're flying. If I fly long haul, I'll generally try and time it to arrive mid/late afternoon so when I get to destination I can have a little wander, get something to eat and drink and then get a good nights sleep. I struggle to sleep on planes so I tend to mix it up by watching films (most long haul flights have a decent selection now), reading, looking out the window (if you're flying over the atlantic, theres likely not much but blue sea), working out where I am and if I might like to visit it and just thinking to myself. Just don't give into temptation to keep checking what the time is ;-)
Are you aged 65 ? Get plenty of ale in airport mate. Then a few more on plane as much as you can for nowt. Save chronicle for plane. Take a car mag too and a paper after that watch a film and you'll be theer. Enjoy.
GPS still works in Flight Mode, so an app like Here We Go, which uses offline maps, still works. You just have to download the map of the area you're flying over before you set off.
Soft footwear or take em off if you ain't got toe jam, head phones, eye mask ( I cant sleep if there is a glimmer of light) something to read if you are into that, post on here if the airline as tinternet or just do what I do and perv over the air stewards ( my preference is the female one's but each to there own ) watch the airlines movie (s) keep checking your hand luggage for the 50th time just to make sure your cash and passports are still in the same place, an aisle seat is good for a good leg stretch but if someone is sat in the middle or window seat who as a bladder like a space hopper then you will be up and down all the flight, not good if you want a nap, enjoy
The only issue I've found is that GPS reception is tricky as you're basically sitting in a metal tube which blocks the signal. However, if you wind your window down and hold it outside it should work.
