Sunday morning fantasy time (steady now). I would "love it", if we signed Ollie. Great attitude, belief, skillbase and would fit in brilliantly with the Pressing game. Sadly I don't think it would ever happen but I can dream.
I said at the end of the 17/18 season we should have bought him. But as per - got ridiculed. Could have bought him then for what £5M ??? What’s he worth a season later - £11M ??? Anyone with an once of common sense could see that it was a sound investment at that time.
Did Barnsley have £5 million to spend + £2.5m in wages per year? If he'd have got injured... It's a risk! What if he didn't want to come? I think most people could have seen it as a good investment .. but you can't spend what you don't have!
Lunatic behaviour in this thread. Like he would have dropped to league 1 even if we matched his wages (which we couldn’t). No chance of getting him now. Just be happy for him and hope he takes his chance when given the opportunity in the premier league.
I think we all knew we should have bought him but we couldn’t afford him and I honestly don’t think he would have come anyway
Not only that, but you can't have one player on those wages and the rest on far less. It would cause unrest.
Most ridiculous post of the year. That takes some doing given the stuff you come out with week on week. Well done.
Echoing the thoughts of other posters above - even if we could have some way afforded him - what makes you think he would have come to us and deliberately put himself through a season in League One when he was a shoe in for the Championship, as he proved?
I’m not sure he understands the concept of anything except the stuff he dreams up himself. £5million+ should have been outlaid by a league one club, to a championship club with parachute payments who clearly had no financial need to sell (and who planned to play the player week in week out), on a player who wouldn’t have wanted to come in a million years - and who would have had to have been paid at least three or four times more than anyone else in the squad. He still thinks he’s right, even though with the benefit of hindsight, we can all see that Barnsley achieved a lot this last season, built on a sense of team and togetherness, the closest bunch we’ve had for years. Group mentality. Yet we’d have been better off with one player taking probably 25% of the whole wage budget? Yes ok. Wouldn’t have been in any way divisive. Balls to it, let’s sign Neymar and Virgil Van Dyke... To address you Young Nudger, nobody doubted the fact that McBurnie would be a fantastic player for us. If you were ‘ridiculed’, it would have been because you were deadly serious that signing him was a realistic option, when anyone with an ounce of common sense would see you were being delusional.
Jeez !!! Maybe Barnsley could not have afforded him - but the directors CAN. And if they are here to develop young players and then sell them on at a profit - while at the same time making Barnsley a competitive team - then McBurnie was/is a stand out talent that was allowed to sail by.
He was fantastic while he was with us, however as much as I would have loved to have seen us sign him he was considerably out of our reach as a league one side and I think this would have still been the case even if we had stayed up.
