Just a gripe really. Can't begrudge anyone wanting to better themselves and get paid a decent wage for what they do but my problem is.. Until recently the majority of players leaving for another club were either playing low level football or in the lesser squads of other clubs. Our team took a gamble on these players and risked a considerable amount of money for Barnsley fc to sign these unknowns and give them the stage to play. Now for arguments sake say pinnock prior to joining us was on a grand a week at low level if that. We signed him n payed 2 grand a week which is a good wage for most people 100k+ a year over 3 yes then offered him a new contract on 5 times that as reported on other posts. Where would this player be if we didn't take the gamble in the first place? Seems as though footballers have a short term memory and live in the moment not thinking anything about where they were 12mths ago. RE reports of Moore if the player had not recovered from the head injury he sustained in Feb then he would still be getting paid by us irrelevant of if he was playing or not this freek injury could happen anywhere at any club and not just on the football pitch. Think the thing is loyalty is no more all players care about is ££££ in there bank.
Forest Green signed him from Dulwich Hamlet, we then signed him from Forest Green, and now he’s going to Brentford. We’re no different to Forest Green or Dulwich Hamlet. We paid a fee, and gave the player a chance, he returned the favour with some fantastic performances and we’re now receiving a fee for compensation. That’s how it works.
Mexborough tyke I agree to some extent but the bit that annoys me is OK at Dulwich he probably be part time £100 a match etc. Forest Green maybe pro earning £400 p/w roughly standard average wage at Barnsley earning in excess off 2k p/w excellent money then u end up at Brentford OK closer to home he's a London boy and he's getting 15k+ a week where would he be if we didn't take the punt on him. All boils down to loyalty and agents
If we didn’t give him the chance he’d probably have gone to a club slightly below us in the pecking order like Rotherham, Donny, Peterborough etc. who would’ve given him a chance on slightly less wages
Yes agreed but wouldn't have been in a promoted team and a player in efl league 1 team of the season at these other clubs thus not as much attention being drawn to his performances week in week out.
Maybe, maybe not but Portsmouth failed to go up & have just sold their centre back for a big fee to Brighton
Let's be honest though with the attendances Portsmouth get and size of club wouldn't be surprised if he was earning for them what we have offered pinnock on his new contract
While we've gone up... and are selling the best defensive partnership for a fee not far off what pompey got for one player.
