Wasnt that one of the digs at him. Highest paid , expensive , but didnt show up enough on the pitch. He was a popular target on here back in the day.
I’m probably a lone figure in this but I thought he was a quality player. But didn’t manage to score enough goals (which he was bought to do) to merit the wage. Some players don’t produce at every club. Jordan Rhodes for example.
I’m going to go with Frimpong. Why else would he have signed with that attitude? It wasn’t for the fame and glory.
The problem we had at that time, was that even though some members of the board appeared to be successful local businessmen, they didn't probably have sufficient collective spare wealth to cover the Clubs debt and day to day operating costs. As I've recounted before, we got chatting to John Dennis in the Hilton close to Wembley Stadium on the eve of the game against Cardiff in the Cup semi. As a supporter, it was patently obvious to me, that in order to stay afloat, the Club relied heavily on the transfer market, with particular regard to the sale of our better players. One source of income was the sale of scratch cards by Gerry Whewall, so we were literally running on a shoe string. The alterations to the time periods for transfers and the collapse of the ITV Digital deal unfortunately pushed us over the edge. Having said that, I have to admit, I am surprised that Nat West pulled the plug on what seemed a fairly small sum of money. There surely must have been underlying circumstances, that caused them to do that. John told us, that the day the Administrators came in, was very sad and you knew he was genuine by just looking at his face. Most of what we now see at Oakwell is down to the hard graft of John, Chris Harrison, Biscuit Barry and Mr Hayselden et al.
Garry O' Connor and the rest of our team gave me one of the best ever birthday memories when he scored in the 5-2 mauling of Leeds United on his debut at Oakwell in 2010. I thought we'd acquired a real gem of a player that night, but even though he eventually came back after his initial loan period, sadly it didn't work out.
Yeah, I believe John and the club themselves were shocked that Natwest pulled the plug at £750k. Which even back then wasn’t much money really. Natwest pointed at the ITV digital collapse. The club pointed out that by the end of the season, they’d be ok due transfer money coming in. Something like that anyway. Poor call by Natwest.
I thought Dennis said that the bank refused a takeover plan by Mr and Mr Hayselden because they thought putting club in admin got their 250k back quicker. Would anyone here sink cash into a football club for no business return after the bank told you to get lost? Can't say I would
I was at an event that Hignett spoke at recently. He surprised me with two comments. First, he’s still claiming that goal in the Play off V Ipswich which Richard Wright scored with his arse. Second, he claimed his weekly wage at Oakwell was £1.37. No way could I believe we’d break our wage structure like that.
