Any increase of *any* crime is bad, but it doesn't actually state what the current figures are anywhere in the article. Given the 200-250 figure quoted from 2012 onwards, that would imply around 1,000-1,200 last year, which is astonishingly bad for a town the size of Barnsley.

A lot of the comments on there really ram home just how many wilfully ignorant people there are in our town. Even scarier, there are plenty more towns that'll be the same or worse.

A lot of this is to do with how crime is recorded. SYP are ‘victim lead’ which basically means if the victim thinks it’s a crime then it gets recorded as a crime. This leads to all sorts of trivial things being recorded as harassment, threatening behaviour, hate crime etc when in reality it is nothing of the sort.

So cutting 20,000 police officers nationally is nothing to do with it?

I'd be very surprised if the number of trivial things recorded as such wasn't dwarfed by the number of crimes that aren't recorded at all because the victim doesn't report them.

Hmmm. I thought we had laws, and people to enforce them because, if not, some people will just do what they want. I have to say my impression is, increasingly, that this is the case. For example, I saw something the other night about police not having the resources to prosecute shoplifters if the value stolen is less than £200. Perhaps the lack of deterrent might encourage shoplifting?

My daughter works for a MP, yesterday she had to get the Police pretty quick due to a constituent becoming violent and aggressive. This is normal behaviour in England, threats to elected politicians and their staff is a daily occurence. All,I repeat all threats of violence and murder and rape are taken seriously by the Police, Special Branch and Counter Terrorism units.
It is obvious that since 2010 and increasingly so since 2015 that anger and hate crimes have surged. The views that White Far Right terrorists hold are not new but are now freely given voice in our mainstream media and encouraged. Even leading to election of people I would class as Fascist or Nazis.
I'll end with a question if a may. Britain and the British people were known for being toleratant, accepting ( though not agreeing) of the law, individuality, polite, modest, respectful. Was that ever true or have we always been the arrogant, bigoted, ignorant, intolerant, people and nation we present to the world?

This kind of thing has been going on for 15-20 years though. I recall the mother in law being briefed at work years ago regarding not challenging anyone stealing small value items because:
    1) it wasn’t worth the potential assault she may get
    2) her chemist had been told not to even call the police for anything under £20

Surely you're not allocating some of the rise in crime to the mass, uncontrolled immigration that Tony Blair's Labour party signed us up to and favoured by so many remainer posters on here. Aren't they all engineers, doctors, nurses, scientists coming here ?. Surely you can't mean that just allowing anyone into our country; which is their right in accordance with the old freedom of movement nonsense we've allowed, would mean that foreign criminals and those hell bent on criminality whilst in our country would be able to ply their trade with impunity owing to the fact that Labour got us into such a financial mess and sold our gold to balance the books cheaper than we gave away Pinnock so the Tories had to slash public service spending to bring us back from the brink - which is why there's no police anymore.

    Surely not.:)

I think it's a very sad state of affairs but a very complex subject when you look at the reasons why, overpopulation coupled with a lack of forward planning by the Labour goverments of the nineties to cope with the numbers coming here and therefore lack of resources and public services, liberalism in our schools and universities has led to a lack of discipline and respect for one another, the abolition of corporal punishment in our schools means that there are no painful consequences for bad behaviour, resentment as wages are kept low by companies who have a huge pool of cheap migrant labour to tap into, resentment as migrants come here for the benefits, the education, the NHS treatments meaning that there's less to go around, you can't get to see your doctor for 3 weeks, you can't get your kid into the school at the end of the street. Then throw in those from the muslim community who refuse to integrate, who support terrorism, who commit acts of terrorism on our own soil.

It's no wonder is it that we've gone from being a tolerant society when we've had the pyss taken out of our generosity and our sense off fairness by so many of those who, with every good intention, we've invited to the feast. And the worst thing about it is that it's all our own doing and that folk just won't see it.

Sorry but the article is about hate crime. I very much doubt that an increase in hate crime and crime of a racist nature is going to come from immigrants.
As for running down public services...are you really exempting the Tories from that accusation?
So all muslims support and commit acts of terrorism?
So many glib generalisations. I've been on council estates in the UK where I wouldn't trust 90% of the residents bar the old timers. And they were all white estates.
The main driver of crime is poverty not race, nationality or religion.

Not lazy journalism, lazy police saying it. Correlation does not necessarily imply causation. Especially on such a complex issue.

It is, but not necessarily true. It depends upon the stats they are using. If the increase is 5 fold, it may be that between 2017 and 2018 it increased by 20, so the following year increased by 100. A five fold increase on the previous year.

Think you've maybe misunderstood Churton, I was proposing the reasons for hate crimes. Yes I think that people are bitter about immigration which is a reason for hate crimes, yes I believe that you must be very naive if you think that racism isn't a two way street, no I don't believe that all muslims are terrorists but some of them are which leads to mistrust, the main driver of crime is greed. Just because someone is poor it doesnt make them a criminal.

    We do.

We also have a violent crime epidemic through out a number of inner cities where gangs of mostly kids and young men run amok fueled by drug money.
Theres senegalese albanian poles pakistani indian iraqi kurdish somali romanian gangs brought up knowing extreme violence getting dropped into the local benefits reservations not beleiving their luck seeing more cash than their entire families have ever seen before clashing with each other and older more established gangs over turf.
They control the streets. The police dont. Not only do they not give a hoot over identikit drug dealer killing identikit drug dealer then entire force is now over politiclised in its upper echolons over polictically correct full of people who ten fifthteen years ago would not have been even close to being qualified to becoming a front line officer nevermind climb the ranks.
Its got too many social workers in uniform, too many people promoted beyond their means so a box gets ticked.
Badly trained in actual policework but dogged obey 'common purpose docterines'
Would rather look for hurty words online and tell people they might be hurty words.
Huge budgets for diversity and virtue signalling.
Painted nails and fancy dresses rainbow cars.
Another 20k like that isnt worth the money diane abbott would pay them.
