Thoughts on the new signing chaplin?

Only seen bits of him in the 1 game hes played.
But he looks decent, is it championship quality though?

I’ve learned not to believe everything I read when supporters give their opinions of players. I’m a bit more inclined to trust the opinions of those whose job it is to sign them. Not that they are infallible either

 

DS clearly likes him. That will do for me.

 

Chaplin at Pompey & Cov - square peg/round hole. If Daniel thinks he fits our system that's good enough for me!

 

I think its clear in the signings that have been made that they are all fairly likely to fit the style of the manager. He's often talked of pace and power and he's added that. He's brought in defenders with height and who seem to be more ball playing and enjoy "duels".. important if we're hit on the counter to our press.

Chaplin is tricky and has pace so I can see him suiting how Stendel wants to play. Time will tell if he's a championship player and if all these players can gel quickly to give us a good enough start to breed confidence that we've not got a long hard season ahead.

 

On the face of it, he has a mediocre background and comes with mediocre recommendations. But some players thrive at different clubs and set ups, not saying hes going to here but Daniel persued him, almost a bit like Bahre. Hes seen something in him and hes got enough favour in the bank with me for me to be behind him on this one. Woody hadnt scored as many as Chaplin and the Fulham fans thought no better of him too and hes turning into being potentially the best striker this club has ever had (praise indeed, be sold for 3m in August then). Chaplin will never have played with a striker as similar and as good as Woody, so will help tremendously in his development. Watching Chaplin the other day, he does look like hes got something about him, i think the 700k we paid initially may turn out to be a bargain, but time will tell.

 

Based on his time at Oakwell, I'm still slightly stunned that not only did Jonathan Walters spend the majority of his career in the Premier League, but was also regular international. I honestly thought his level was only ever going to be around League 2 to Conference.

 

Yeah, point in case exactly.

Different times at different clubs.

End of the day, no professional footballer is that poor - you can’t ‘wing it’ to get paid £2-3k a week. The system finds you out before that. It’s then down to luck, good coaches, confidence, hard work and staying fit.

 

I couldn't care less what other fans think of him, I'll judge him on his contributions at Oakwell and if Stendel wanted him that's good enough for me.

 

I've heard several mention his pace on here but if you read Cov fans views they all state how he lacks pace. Got to admit I also thought he was quick but apparently not. I would say that from the few clips from his debut he seems a very intelligent player and he can certainly strike the ball well.

 

There seem to have been a few instances where he's shown acceleration in clips though. If your back is often to goal, or you're played in a way that doesn't suit your natural style and skills, it may well be that your natural attributes don't shine through as obviously.

 

I thought the same mate and was shocked with the number of fans stating how slow he is. Guess we'll soon find out. I still think he'll be a top player for us regardless.

 

End of day speed kills. As a sub to bring on against tired defenders if we are chasing a goal he should be great. Not sure as a starter tho. Hes streets ahead of victor so its defo a positive for me....

 

Years back, one of the guys I sat with in the Ponty swore blind Martin Bullock wasn't quick enough. Less so after his wondergoal against Leicester... but it takes all sorts.

He does seem to be very tenacious from the clips, the way Stendel plays, we should see very soon who is quick. Just from the way he naturally gets players to flood forward.

I'm hoping with additional pace, it buys a little bit of time to allow for more decision making and we can try and become more incisive and deliberate. More rapier than blunderbuss. I doubt we'll often get 20 attempts in the championship to get 1 or 2 goals.

 

Looks to be an upgrade on Moncur and Hedges to me. With players like this the question is what do they contribute without the ball? At our level we can;t afford to be carrying anyone when not in possession -the problem with Moncur, and to some extent Thiam, is they don't always seem as committed when chasing. Most footballers only have the ball for a couple of minutes per game, we know that Moncur/Thiam can be very good in those 2 minutes, but ultimately you need to have players who know what they're doing the rest of the time for the team. Is he going to "dig in" when we're one-up with 5 minutes to go? Is he capable of starting games, or is he still going to be an impact sub like at Cov & Portsmouth? That will be the big step up for him - he's clearly got an eye for goal and the skills to play at Championship level - has he got the rest of it? We shall see.

 

I think regardless of how pacey Chaplin is we have definitely added pace to the team with the signings of Wilks and Thomas and even through Diaby in defence. Decision-making is definitely something we will need to improve on in the championship and from what I've seen of Chaplin I think he will help in that regard.

 

I've also always thought that you can't wing an entire career as a pro footballer. A couple of games maybe. Or if you're Ali Dia 15 minutes. However, when I think about Dave Regis and Paul Gibbs.....

 

Looking forward to watching him play for us, been a few year since we've had a quick striker up top for us so it does add a different dimension to our attacker rather then Moore being the target man and Woodrow feeding off him. By fetching Chaplin in we'll have teams guessing more about how we are going to play.
