We've still outscored their first innings and didn't collapse as spectacularly as they did. They can't rely on Smith to do that every innings- nor will their tail end bat as well as that.
Yep they could, but he's not invincible and could make a mistake quite easily. I wouldn't want to be reliant on one batsmen to win tests for us, that's for certain.
I'd take a draw all day long. Smith just wears bowlers down then the Australian middle order just pick up the scraps.
Think Anderson’s injury has cost us this match, it’s just put too much workload on the rest of the attack. Add to that the fact that Ali has had a mare, a 3 man bowling attack isn’t going to cut it. Let’s hope we show some grit with the bat and get to Lord’s at 0-0.
Hopefully with a bit of rain and standing our ground we can survive this as you say. Hate it when rain influences a match but don't mind on this occasion!
England will probably be 200 all out but it looks like a road where if we bat sensible we can still win. The pitch didn't do much for our bowlers to make it more difficult for Australia.
After first morning session, the level of performance has been nowhere near consistently good enough. If we go into the rest of this Ashes with no guts and with no spinner, we'll lose handsomely. Hopefully a mix of weather and rearguard keep it at 0-0. The sooner this woeful coach is gone the better. Amazed he lasted the debacle of 2017.
Draw or loss from here I'm afraid. If we bat the day out (without rain) would likely have 250 ish on the board. Knowing England we will enter the final hour 9 down.
Lyon’s getting a seven-for tomorrow. All out 135. Onwards and downwards, if we persist with walking wicket and bits and pieces bowler Moheen Ali and one of JB or Butler don’t find some form or are also dropped we’re going to get white washed.
I would say that's a likely outcome for tomorrow. Wouldn't write the series off yet a lot of cricket to be played and England have been consistently inconsistent for years now.
There are a few players constantly under performing with the bat. Bairstow, Butler, Stokes and Root aren't stepping up to the plate. Yes Root and Stokes got fifties in the first innings but in the context of the game they holed out. No excuse for top five batsmen getting set and giving it away. Bairstow and Butler play poor stroke after poor stroke. Hopefully when Bayliss departs there is another overhaul.
Don't forget we've only got 10 players and they've got 12. Makes getting a result pretty tricky over 5 days . If Anderson was fit we'd have probably bowled them out for 175 in their first innings.
