Is he the best coach weve ever had?

Bassett achieved what was par for the course. He had side awash with talent, which had badly underachieved the year before. Had he played Arjan De Zeeuw or Adie Moses alongside Morgan at centre half rather than Tuttle / Chettle / Brown, we'd have gone up automatically. Instead we conceded nearly 70 goals and finished 4th, despite having a much better side than Man City that season, who somehow fluked second. If he'd not been so keen to sell our incumbent centre halves and replace them with a couple of old buddies, then I am absolutely sure we'd have finished second.

 

He’s in the running, let’s see how this season pans out before we can say more.

 

Hunter's Team was amazing and he was gone too soon.
Wilson got a great set of lads to play great stuff and the rest is history.
Nobody thought Bassett was going to give us a team to excite - but he did.
Hecky got a great team playing well together which was a joy to watch. Initially.
And Stendel is well on his way to overhauling the lot of them. And I never thought anybody would ever overtake Sir Norman of Hunter in my affections.

Too early to tell on Stendel. Hecky looked a world beater until he threw his toys out of pram. Anything can happen.

 

Hunters team were arguably the best coached side imo.
They were a team of misfits that weren’t particularly standout players at previous clubs .
But Hunter moulded them together and coached them into imo being the best Barnsley side to have never played in the top flight with some amazing football .
Danny also first time played some amazing football and difference with hunter added the quality needed for final push .
Basset coached a very exciting team that would outscore their opponents to win but he got rid of Dezeuw to replace with inferior imo.
Daniels team are good to watch and I like the high press and his enthusiasm but time will tell whether he’s in same category as the above .

 

To be fair it was an uphill struggle with lack of signings.Remember when In pre season in Spain he had one striker to start the championship campaign .
Stendal as not had to suffer the lack of signings.
However i do hope they listen to him in his plee for some experience to guide them on the field.

Although it’s been said a thousand times on here - the facts remain that the previous owner did not extend the contracts of a large proportion of the 1st Team ...... so they were sold to raise money.

IMO - Patrick could not allow these contracts to run down, and players leave for nothing, because the income was wanted by Patrick (and rightly so) to recoup some of the £££Millions he had put into the club.
But the fire sale of 01/17 was the start of the slide into relegation the following season.

The Hecky team of the Hourihane era (that was put together for relatively little money) would have given this current team a run for their money and may have beaten them.
So how good was Hecky ???

That’s not taking anything away from Stendel.
They have very similar styles of playing.
But when Stendel does leave then I for one would welcome back Hecky.

Nudge, James Cryne was the one who found stendel. He was the one who put him forward to the new owners. Fact.

 

See, that's what I thought, James was the person who introduced data based scouting for players, makes sense he'd have something similar in play for coaches.

 

The best I've seen

Wilson- took us to the premiership playing great football pissed off to wednesday never did anything anywhere else came back for a 2nd spell which was awful.

Hecky- took over on Lee Jay we were already in the jpt final and on a 7 game winning run did really well until conor and winnall left and he put his own style on the team then lost the plot.

Stendel- implemented his style of play on a new squad last season who had just been relegated got them playing some of the best stuff since Wilson, has also had players sold from under him, got on with it. Early days this season but if we carry on wont be long before the bigger clubs become interested and I believe with his passion for the game and the way he has us playing he could end up head coach at a very high level.

Wilson's 1st spell for me but I'm a big stendel fan he is doing a great job long may it continue. he must love it here with the ponty Saturday singing his name 2nd half it certainly looked like he does.

 

Totally agree with all you said. For pure football at its best has to be Norman for me. Bassett came with the reputation of longball football. Proved us all wrong.

 

Thought Conway has said on many occasions the Board decided on style and they looked at the list drawn up, which I took as meant along lines of spreadsheet scenario, which if is case then JC was definitely involved

 

I don't know if he is even a good coach never mind the best. I've not seen him on the training field. He certainly can pick a winning team. The teams he has produced certainly look better technically than most I have see in over 60 years of supporting the Reds. My only concern is that German Clubs will have taken notice of him and will come in for him.

 

No one has mentioned Andy Ritchie and that promotion to the Championship at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff. It was a good team - included a certain Paul Heckingbottom if I remember...

 

Yes that’s what was said.
Also something that was said by the new owners is that they wanted to become more international and also widen the appeal.
From this I assumed the new ownership were laying down that they wanted someone from the continent.
As I’ve said PC and JC introduced the moneyball system - so that is likely to have been used in the final search to find a manager.
It would be interesting to hear how it worked out.
It would also be interesting to hear why they decided to do a job on Hecky.
