If you're equating being called a sheep shagger with actual racism, then the point is lost

There has been millennia of prejudice of the Jewish people leading to hatred, violence, deaths, gulags, genocide all based around that stereotype. Whether the person you are aiming it at is of Jewish faith or not, what you’re saying is that they are ‘less than’ because they have behaved in a way that you perceive all Jewish people to.

If you are unable to see the difference between that and someone saying the word ‘dingle’ you are beyond hope and I entirely pity you.

'twas a lighthearted message - no points being made - no equating.

I hope you've missed the point - because you've failed to explain why something (something bad) said innocently is worse than something said in malice.

If you haven't missed the point you appear to have reverted to the standard response of woke social justice warriors - that of emporers new clothes syndrome - you must be a fool if you can't see it - but yet you can't explain it either.

As I said, whether intentional or not it propagates an ancient prejudice that has been used to persecute and oppress. I would hope upon learning that reasonable people would then apologise and stop using it.
However, in your case I see you have opted to double down with alt right memes. It is a shame and endemic of the current political landscape. I earnestly do not believe this conversation would have been necessary 5 years ago but this slow erosion of hard fought equality rights is becoming more and more prevalent. Furthermore, again, it’s not even remotely comparable to dingle and you are a disgrace for suggesting as such.

Agreed. i don't dispute this but that's not what we're talking about. We're talking about whether clumsiness is worse than hate.

    Meh!

What the guardian readers of this world can't see is that 5 years ago people wouldn't have had the courage - they'd have been too scared of the XXXXist card being played as you are. They would have been too scared of the last sentence - too concerned they were the only one who didn't get it. The only person who can't see the emporers new clothes.

So I'm a disgrace for even asking you for an explanation of something I dont' understand am I. Well it's no wonder the masses are revolting. what the ****.

I've asked you to please explain - please educate why something said in innocence is worse than something hateful which makes me feel bad. Why are my feelings less valuable than others who aren't even there. Please educate. Please help me understand.

Oh you can't - you just insult me for being thick yet don't have the ability to explain.

But people are now realising this "you should just know it to be so" is emporers new clothes and have had enough of the erosion of the values - if not the rights - of the masses - hence global populism and Trump, Brexit, etc.

Where - give us an example- I'm not sure I'm aware of actual erosion of equality I can get upset about. Mistakes yes. Erosion of rights no.

I'll accept there is now rightful and vocal resistance to the constant requirement to bow down to the increasing outlandish demands of minority pressure groups.

But if you're saying rights of minority groups are being eroded - I can't see it. I'm prepared to be wrong (note - I'm prepared to be wrong - prepared to be educated and have my ignorance educated- are you?) - but I can't see it.

So if you read what I posted - I'm not suggesting it is. I'm asking you to explain why it isn't.

Come on sunshine - explain it. Explain why someone from your home town of Barnsley - with a popluation similar in magnitude to the total jewish population of the UK should not be more upset for hate speach against us. Explain why this is less valid than a simply clumsy innocent use of a word that someone doesn't even understand.

But once more you fail to do so. Just play the emporers new clothes - if you can't see them you must be thick card.

And to the cut of this.

If you - or more relevantly Tom Watson or Kier Starmer could explain this and other issues similar - maybe just maybe we can end poplulism. Heal the division. move on progressively.

But at the moment the position you take is the one creating the division not offering a solution.

Hopefully you can understand what I'm getting at.

Simply telling folk they are thick and should just naturally understand and accept stuff they don't understand isn't working. We need another solution.

My mate ( surname White) is called Chalky and he introduces himself as such, it's his nickname and he hasn't once pulled anyone up for it or got out a race card. Now I am not for one min condoning racism, it's vile, but where is the line drawn. Would anyone on here refuse to call someone Chalky if that what he says he wants to be called

Not the same thing as your mate likes being called it but I used to be called ‘Casper’, ‘milk bottle’ and ‘snowflake’ (before the new meaning). Random people used to comment on my skin colour all the time (I was shopping in Primark when the cashier told me I was really pale and unwell looking whilst folding my clothes, someone shouted ‘look at her legs’ at me across the street in Majorca when on holiday with my friends, every single time I’ve been in an airport coming home people would joke ‘where have you been on holiday? The Alps?) I hated, hated, hated it and I’m still hugely affected by it. I won’t ever go anywhere with bare legs, wearing tights in 30 degrees heat. I take fake tan on holiday to reapply the day before I come home so people don’t comment. One day, I want to reply that they’re ******* ugly but I don’t think it’s polite to comment on it unasked but that would just cause agro I don’t need. I generally just ignore them or fake laugh. I did burst into tears once though when I’d just had enough as it was the 3rd person to comment in that airport and the man told me to not be so sensitive. His wife did tell him to shut up though.

There are certain characteristics protected in law; these are based on the evidence that historically sections of society are mistreated and abused because of those characteristics.

I’m sorry that you feel that people think you’re thick for not understanding that very simple concept.

If only you’d spent as much effort educating yourself on some factual points instead of alt right websites, you wouldn’t feel so ‘thick’ or victimised, you’d learn a little history about what being a victim actually means.

It’s clear you may not be a racist, but you are an insensitive bigot. He appeared to be asking for your help in understanding... instead you reiterated the thick remark.

He was never called thick to begin with- he said that as a straw man among other irrelevant untruths to attack and detract from the actual awful thing he originally stated. That is why I didn't even bother with his reply.

The fact you've said 'reiterated' suggests you've fallen for it and I think you owe Donny-Red an apology if you actually read what he says.

I agree with you that having malice behind a remark and saying something like I've been Jewed without knowing why its offensive is different. However, having been told why its offensive against Jews or indeed that it is then there is no mistake if you use it again. And it is just as bad

Ok, I’ll read back when I get chance. But hate breeds hate, and Donny red whilst, intentions are good... does appear to create more of a divide, than educate and help.

I hate people that are merely acquaintances or not even that saying "bye you've put some timber on" as if it's o.k to go up to someone and comment on their appearance.

I don't even like it from people I know. I think pleased to see you too you total knob.

Have a read of his post again - and mine. I believe I was more than tolerant, I didn't call him thick, he suggested he felt thick and I advised him how to get over that by reading up on protected characteristics. I'm enjoying the 'bigotry' slant though - it reminds me of debating with adolescent racists 15 years ago - 'arguing against intolerance is just another form of intolerance'. Hilarious!!

It's obvious from many posts here that people have fallen for some right wing propaganda designed to eradicate hard fought rights. There is no equivalence between bullying an individual, taking the mick out of fans of other teams and straight out racism, to pretend there might be is to completely misunderstand the issue. It saddens me that people even need this explaining to them.

But at least we know the answer to 'How long does it take to forget the lessons learned during WW2?'.

    Here's the edited highlights...
Is that really the attitude of someone looking for answers?

He already knows who his enemies are... Guardian readers, Tom Watson and Kier Starmer (where do they get this **** from), but can't work out how comes the law protects Jews but not people from Barnsley.

I really hope Austinho that you understand the relevance of 'emperors new clothes' it's the nugget of crucial information in there.

It's the first time I've seen the word written down. It never occurred to me it was even spelt that way, never mind the Jewish connotations. Most people don't think of the etymology of slang words they are using.

He needs to understand that the law does protect both Jews and people from Barnsley and Jewish Barnsley people. I can see why it riled you, but rising to it in that manner merely cements his misguided understanding and prejudice of yourself. I’ve got to admit, from the 2 or 3 posts I read you did come across that way. But please accept my apologies if I jumped the gun.

We’ve come a long way since WW2 and through education people are better for it. There will always be a minority of people who dedicate themselves to hate, but generally in my opinion and limited experience, we are heading in the right direction. The fact that we can educate in this manner is a massive step forward. I had no idea the background of the racial stereotype that this thread was originally about... to be honest, it wasn’t until it was pointed out that I realised it was a racial stereotype. My naivety does not make me a racist, but if I continued to use it after finding out, that would.

I don’t think that you’ve said anything awful, but I do think a little thought on both sides of this could have been written better; but that’s the problem with using a keyboard..

    Your question appeared to be

“I've asked you to please explain - please educate why something said in innocence is worse than something hateful which makes me feel bad. Why are my feelings less valuable than others who aren't even there. Please educate. Please help me understand.”

Something said in innocence is not as bad as something said with hate. Your feelings are as valid as the next persons. And if you want you could also raise a discrimination case if there was one. What we need to think about is that innocence bit. If you find out that it’s offensive and carry on, is it still innocent? I like an earlier post on I here used the term Jewed in my teens... I had no idea what it meant, except for being cheated or robbed. I did not even link it to the Jewish religion like that. I don’t think I’d even met a Jew! But as soon as I did understand, I never used the term again. So if you know something is a racial slur, it shouldn’t be used without expecting repercussions.

These are only my views and I stand to be corrected.
