Good signing an all that, but a bit suspect. The transfer window is shut, so Brighton have agreed to cancel his contract, so he can sign for Charlton.
When the deadline was 31st August, if a player was registered to a club after the deadline had passed, they couldn’t register elsewhere after that date. Assume they’re still sticking to 31st for a ‘registered’ deadline.
No the player buys out his contract then gets a signing on fee from Charlton which just happens to be at least the amount of his Contract buy out. No brown envelopes required all above board nothing to see here Guv honest. Drives a coach and horses through the rules bit like owners buying their clubs ground for an inflated amount to get round FFP like a certain Tuna purveyor and a scrap heap valued at 60 million somewhere on the A61. Football is rotten to the core it's as simple as that.
My understanding was that the player had to be out of contract before the closing of the window, which clearly wasn’t the case here. I can only assume that the ‘window’ in this case is deemed just a local rule, and the player would need to be out of contract before the European window closes at the end of August (beginning of September this year). It’s bizarre and it absolutely stinks to the core. However like their persistent fouling and throwing themselves to the floor, it is a clever use of manipulating the rules to their advantage. Morally bankrupt but if they can get away with it you can’t blame them.
