Worst still that he hit it so it would have been out. Leach nearly did a no ball on a previous review and he's a spinner.

    History would suggest otherwise.

Before 20/20 and the days when international teams probably played no more then 10 50 overs matches a year england players played fairly regularly for their counties. How often has Archer played 4 day cricket and bowled 40 overs? He's not used to it and it showed. He was knackered after lords. Mikey Holding pointed this out with Archer clearly not able to put as much effort into his action during this game (but he has spades of ability - great stats in the first innings despite being a notch down).

It doesn’t matter how great your bowlers are if your batting line up fails repeatedly test after test series after series year after year.

Bayliss is beyond woeful as a coach and Root isn’t and never was a captain. Just like Roy and Burns aren’t openers, Buttler, Stokes, Bairstow and Denly aren’t middle order batsmen

It’s been obvious for years. This Australia team is amid the worst I’ve ever seen... yet they are miles better than we are.

If the ECB ever want to win the Ashes again its time to make some proper tough decisions for the long term.

roy keeps his place despite fitness doubts after, pope hits 200+ for surrey, i'm all for keeping faith with players, but this is the wrong type of game for roy

on the plus side, durham lost 7/16 in under 4 overs, sunny day out in notts may be good now ;-)

Having seen some dire England batting performances during the 80s and 90s today has to be up there as one of the.worst.

Trying to.make one day players into test players is a failed experiment (Roy Buttler)

Whatever happened to having batsmen who wanted to bat and bat?

The excess of the one day game is ruining the longer format.

In fairness i am certain Archer did not expect to be bowling just after lunch on day 2 after bowling out the Aussies on day 1.

Roy is not and never will be a test opener.

Need to get shut of Roy Denly and Buttler from the batting line up and look at bringing in Dom Sibley Ollie Pope and possibly a return for Gary Ballance.

After getting 6fer he was probably expecting the batsmen to give him a day's rest...

You can always trust Bob Willis to say it how it is. Bayliss, Root and Thorpe could all be looking at the sack and the ECB need to make test players available for more four day games. A decent team could still get any total set. Three days to go on a pitch that's more like a day 2 with all the time lost on day 1. You could spend the rest of today tiring the bowlers by not playing any shots unless it's on the stumps and you'd still only have to go at two runs a over for the last two days against a tiring team.

Unfortunately we aren't a decent team so will lose.

Right lads. 359 needed. Plenty of time. No need to attack at all. Just don't get out, and the runs will come. Good luck.
