Quite busy around town before the match. Had a bad beer experience - but that’s for another separate post. Good turn out by Luton fans. Followed the crowd to the railway station and saw what was happening with regard to fans crossing the bridge within the station - definitely be a separate post about that debacle !!! Had a chat with the Tykes TV film crew - the producer, sound recordist and presenter. As for the match. NO .... not surprised one bit - not even from the first minute. Luton obviously watched the Birmingham game very carefully and realised that the Barnsley players confidence was at a low. So they came with a game plan to come out of the blocks like a train - get one goal and the confidence in the young Barnsley players is likely to collapse. And that’s exactly what happened. It wasn’t that Barnsley played that badly - it was a case of Luton doing a brilliant job on these young Barnsley players. The game was won in the first 5 minutes of the game. Because of the Luton approach - Barnsley never got into 1st gear. A HUGE HUGE lesson for Barnsley to learn from. The owners have put a very young team together - there is no steadying hand on the field. I’m not saying here that this is a bad thing but because of it these types of defeats are likely to happen on and off throughout this season. Has the new owners put a recruitment plan together that has very little chance of success? That discussion is for a separate post. As for the players: The Luton shock and awe tactics caused mayhem with the Barnsley defence and goalkeeper. But IMO under normal circumstances we have a good goalkeeper, 4 excellent centre backs. Halme and Sibbick looked comfortable at centre backs. But we still have a weakness at left back. However - the biggest weakness is midfield. I’m not sure what the 3 midfielders roles are. They all seem to be running around like headless chickens. I thought that Bahre was supposed to play infront of the holding 2 midfielders. Is McGeehans role the holding midfielder? Because watching the game it wasn’t clear who was doing what. Distribution from midfield continues to be poor. Thiam - is really struggling - so IMO he should not be in the starting 11. So overall I came away from the match relatively calm. One things for sure - Daniel will get things right !!! So now is the time for the owners to show support for Daniel. And so should the fans - which they did against Luton - singing even when we were 3-0 down. Well done !!! So onto Wigan and Leeds. As things stand owt could happen. We could lose 3-0 or win 3-0 in both those games.
I'd like to see Styles come in the starting lineup- either for Bahre or McGeehan.... Also I'd like to see Cavare back - a lot of our threat has disappeared without a proper attacking full back on that side
I’d still say the defence is the problem, hence why Andersen made way. He had a mare in that game and wasn’t much better at Birmingham. For once I thought Williams played well when he came on For me I’d not be too disheartened with Halme and Sibbick at centre half against Wigan. Can’t be worse than Diaby/Andersen partnership so far. We desperately need cavare back in at right back
Most posts arrr just blurt art. Can you tell ??? But some posts I do actually think about before posting.
Dreading the L**ds match. I'll be on a lads weekend to the Algarve - 2 out of the 4 being L**ds fans. At the start of the season I was really looking forward to getting in a bar to watch the game hopeful that our next batch of spreadsheet recruits could give them a decent game. Now I am dreading 2 things - 1) a mauling and 2) A miserable bl00dy Sunday in the company of those 2. I have made my mind up regarding the spreadsheet; it stands a good chance of working in L1 - as we have proved - because you can generally put decent talent together and the standard is such that if you do it right, you stand a chance. But in the Champ ....... no It blatantly doesn't work. Second time I have seen it now and it is not enjoyable. The 'rinse / repeat' analogy will be used a lot this season and Saturday left a sour taste for me. Each to his own, but Wigan is reasonably easy for me but I am voting with my feet.
