A couple of photos from this afternoon at Oakwell. Daniel Stendel and Chris Stern were very interested in the story about the flag, which Dale Tonge told them. He was a young player at the time when Patrick Cryne got involved, just after we were in admin, so he experienced it first hand.
I think many fans dont appreciate quite how close we were to not starting that season when Patrick took over
I still think there needs to be a permanent tribute to PC in/around Oakwell. Maybe a statue of him "sat" in his favourite seat in the West Stand(that can be moved and relocated should it ever be re-built). Same with Norman Rimmington too. There should never be another match played at Oakwell without those to sat "watching"...
I think PC was opposed to this. In time I guess that would be a lovely thing, as would be something for Norman, who my dad knew very well in his youth, growing up in Mapplewell & for a short time he trained my dad as an engineer, after his retirement, before Tim Ward brought him back to the club. The most important thing for now is for the employees of the club & new supporters be made aware of both these people. We live in very transient times now, where players, managers, CEOs come and go very quickly. These are some of the many people who changed the club's future in the long term. I'd mention also Barry Murphy, who I still see on the pitch at every home match as a club ambassador. The man who holds the club record for appearances. It is important that these people are recognised. Well done to @Stahlrost for keeping the flag flying.
Ja Both Daniel and Chris were surprised that a Barnsley lad could speak German. I also spoke to Mike Bähre and Patrick Schmidt in German yesterday afternoon at the Macmillan coffee event. Mike's English is just about perfect, but Patrick's needs a bit of work. I think both were genuinely pleased to be able to speak their own language for a while.
The club is full of staff with Barnsley in the blood. From boardroom to back office. The icons of our club and town should never be forgotten.
Brilliant, my German is crap. I studied it for two years at Holgate (my French & Spanish is little better, but I try). It warms my heart, that despite all the divisive stuff that is going on in both the country, Barnsley & the BBS, (which I still think is a great institution in itself), that this kind of message and communication is going between fans & the club. Serious respect. I know at times I am a joker on here, but I really appreciate that some people, like yourself are making us think about the important stuff, that binds us all together.
Well said. It makes me sad for clubs like Bury, that they have people like that too & now due to the EFL & ******* like Dale they have lost it. Patrick Cryne rescued us, there is no doubt about that.
Thank you. I think a lot of credit for this relationship should go to Daniel Stendel and his colleagues. The fact that he ended up in Garrison a few times shortly after he joined, that he lives in Tarn and socialises in Tarn, speaks volumes. He's a very busy man, but makes himself available to ordinary fans like Lucy (who also helps with the flag) and me. Contrary to what people say about German humour, he's a proper laugh. This aft when taking the photos, I had to walk out onto the pitch to get everything in, then stand on a chair. I asked him if it was OK to go on the pitch, to which he replied "yes of course". I set off walking, with my back to him, to be greeted with "Oi, gerroff the bloody pitch!" in a great booming voice. I think Tongy had taught him it right there and then. He's a smashing fella, as is Chris and of course "One of our own" Tongy. It will be a sad day if/when this backroom team breaks up. To those in charge at Oakwell, get this guy (and his mates) signed up. He's worth whatever he's asking for, trust me.
The south west corner should be remembrance corner, three statues at the top looking out over the pitch, the reverend to the left, Rimo to the right, with PC in the centre, stood in his Wembley suit, JPT in one arm the Playoff trophy in the other. Below them at the bottom should be a Oakwell where the ashes of past reds fans can be deposited. It would look fantastic in my opinion.
Sadly the flag from a distance looks like Father Ted and Steptoe. No offence meant, just think it's kinda funny.
Barry Murphy is the nicest guy you could ever meet. His club appearance record will never be beaten. A true hero.
