I agree. Can't believe #RIPMugabe is trending at number one and full of praise for himself for standing up against the west.

Weird one this. I work with a hell of a lot of Zimbabweans & they were happy to see him not in power but they didn’t say a bad thing about him. They were more critical of the new guy taking over.

The man lived in opulence whilst the majority of the public lived in poverty! Thank goodness it couldn’t possibly happen here! Could it?

I have to say, reading about him in the papers today has been really interesting. I've only ever known him to be an autocratic despot who ruined Zimbabwe's economy, but I've learned a lot about his role in overthrowing Rhodesia and the relative success of his early years in power. One commentator compared him to Mandela, noting that while the latter served one term before standing down and became one of Africa's most revered statesmen, Mugabe just couldn't bring himself to let go.

Power corrupts and it corrupted him more than anyone. The young Robert Mugabe would have despised his older self.

Not really as simple as that...Mugabe was in a coalition with a guy called Joshua Nkomo during the war against white rule...after it he shafted Nkomo and unleashed mayhem on Nkomo's ethnic group. He was no Mandela.

Apparently he’s still favourite to win the next election

I don't think I said, or even implied, that it was simple.

Apologies Sestren if you thought I was criticising you....certainly not the case.
I was just adding a little detail for those who might not remember or know anything about it.
It was more a critique, if anything, on those who suggest Mugabe was a statesman...for a time it did look ( or was presented in the media) as though it was Statesman Mugabe when compared to potentially undemocratic violent dictator Nkomo...in practise it turned out to be the opposite.
Their organisations won the war in partnership, but when the dust settled Mugabe purged Nkomo and his people with some very nasty repression.
