Does anyone remember “Ronnie Moore’s a w***er, he wears a w***ers hat”? Or, “We’ve got more hair than you, Rodney Fearn” to the fly the flag tune. I ask because I know as I sang about Ronnie, not only did I not think he was a w***er, but had a massive respect for his ability, and I’m sure fans much less hirsuite than Fearn sang along with gusto while admiring his skill. So, does anyone think Rashford et al are guilty of justifying racist chanting by making public aware of just how well it works at upsetting them?
I understand your point Tony but I completely disagree. I know that by letting the racists know that they are getting under your skin they will use it as ammunition but the players targeted by the racists should speak out. We should all speak out and condemn racism. There is no excuse for it and there should be zero tolerance for it.
This is the logical equivalent of saying someone is justifying violence by showing that it hurts when they get punched in the face thereby proving the violence is effective. It makes no sense whatsoever, other than to try to justify racism in and of itself.
Congratulations, you've just posted the most ludicrous line of arguement the BBS has ever seen. And that is some feat.
Some shocking answers to this thread. He asked a question. He did not make a statement. And he put it context. And, I believe, could have used a much better word than justify. I'll ask the question slightly reworded: Are Rashford et al arming those who make racist chants by admitting that it affects them? My response to that would be the same as Mario's but that doesn't make the question invalid. We all get a better understanding of the world by questioning, we get nothing from shouting down those that question.
What! - just no The Ronnie Moore song - I must admit back in the '70s I thought it was funny - but then I was a teenager boy. I wouldn't sing it today- whilst not racist its definitely offensive and someone would need to try very hard to get that level of abuse from me, and for sure Ronnie Moore has always struck me as a decent bloke and a good footballer. Maybe Joey Barton ....? More importantly that has nothing to do with racist chanting so there is no connection to your second point. Even as a teenager I was uncomfortable with racist chanting in the '70's and today its totally and rightly unacceptable. Edit - additonal line having reread the OP - I think the key point was the question and as Jay says above its not so well worded - if the question said £So, does anyone think Rashford et al are guilty of Encoraging racist chanting by making public aware of just how well it works at upsetting them." Then my answer is If they find it upsetting of course they should mention it. if some people take that as encouragement then the problem is with those who are making racist chants - not those who are upset
Very apparent on this board that if you step a millimeter over to the right your a racist knuckle dragging thug.........
The Moore song stems from him putting a coppers hat on, that had been knocked off at a match. He found it quite funny. Full story is on this blog: https://podtail.com/en/podcast/undr-the-cosh/8-ronnie-moore-it-s-you-ron-ron-ron/
Sorry can't agree- they are totally different situations and that's likely why people have got their backs up. Singing songs about someone being a wánker is vastly different from racist chanting. To suggest that they are guilty of justifying chanting is ridiculous. Ignoring it is not going to make it go away- it is going to make it appear acceptable.
I know, what's the world coming to when you can't imply that the victims of racist abuse should just take it on the chin without being criticised? Political correctness gone mad.
