Just seen Bruce Dyers interview with Toby Foster on Radio Sheffield. Its a real eye opener to his early demons and finding God.I don't know how to post it on here so if somebody could find it there's audio and visual video from Radio Sheff.
When I have seen Mr.Dyer at home matches he comes across as a gentleman with great humility, always pleasant and approachable, I am pleased he has made our town his home
As someone who was badly affected by fundamentalist christianity in my youth, i'm not interested in the slightest in his religious beliefs. He was a good player for us and seems a decent, well intentioned person & I hear he has done good work in the community.
Well - when I was a youth we was all affected by too much alcohol and getting pi.ssed regularly. These days youths are affected by too much drink and drugs. Never come across anyone yet that as a youth got too much fundamentalist Christianity. Is it common???
You are not vaguely interested in the fact that I was "badly affected". There isn't a cat in hell's chance I'm going to give you any of the disturbing details. I'm fine with people being Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, Sikhs, etc, but if I want to find out about their faith I'll ask them, I'm not interested in them preaching about their faith. As I said Bruce seems a good guy, i'm just not interested in hearing about his faith, as that type of born again christianity tore my family & friends apart when i was young.
Sorry to hear that John, when people take anything too far it can be traumatic, as a so so Christian, like you, I cannot stand being preached too, but I was lucky, I was allowed to tread my own path without recriminations.
As I say I'm sure Bruce is one of the good guys. One of my best friends is a Baptist Minister in Hammersmith & I was instrumental in him finding his faith back in the early 80's. He is another good person, doing great work with the homeless & with others in need in that part of London. He is also a massive music fan & writes for many of the biggest artists in the world. He knows though never to mention religion with me, thankfully, as he knows what happened. He now knows that I refer to myself as an agnostic, that does believe in the basic teachings of Jesus, as we believe they are reported some time after his death, which I think are the basis of most of western morality. Fundamentalism of all types worries me, "the Family" on Netflix shows one of the ways it has infiltrated politics in the USA. We are all aware of the Islamic fundamentalist issues, Catholic sex scandals, etc but they as common around the world in many religions. It doesn't mean religion is bad per se, but fundamentalism leads easily to mind control.
