And other such phrases.. They keep showing up accross a number of threads. When we go down it wont be like last time. The retention of a decent squad. The last time we went down, even though they were not all everyones cup of tea the squad was on paper was strong and had a bit about them having still managed under poor management to compete. Davies,Lindsay, Moore,Potts etc. This current squad, for what isnt sold off over the next window isnt a patch on that team. Its going to be another complete rebuilding process come june. And as we know. That can be a lottery. It could be a good 3 or 4 seasons before we start pushing again in promotion.
I agree. Last time we went down I knew if we kept the team together and had a competent manager we would get promoted this time I suspect if we don’t change things up and lose Woodrow and Mowattbwe will struggle to hit the top 6
Top six. I admire your optimism. With the squad we have now we would struggle to reach the play offs.
Tbf we ve not played half the season yet. And the one benefit of such a young team should be their ability to learn and improve. Obviously a lot will depend on a new manager coming in and who we retain of the team but Collins easily looks as though he is capable as doing as good a job as Adam did for us last season, Dougal and Brown should in theory do better for more game time, Wilks performed for Doncaster in league 1 etc etc.
Remember the plan. We sell players mid contract to earn a few bob. As such its likely Woodrow, Mowatt, and maybe one or two others will go and will be expecting to go. I can only see that we will be in L1 at this point and rebuilding. I used to have belief and hope but i think the pattern now is clear to see
Except from last time we went down everyone said all our players were rubbish and would struggle in league one, particularly Potts, Mcgeehan, Mowatt etc. It’s easy with hindsight to say that we went down with a half decent Championship squad when in reality we didn’t, Morais took a lot of the blame for this. If it hadn’t been for Barnes in the first half of the season and McBurnie in the second that side would have been relegated comfortably. Then take the loanees such as Gardner and Williams and it really was a poor squad that went down.
I would be surprised if we held onto either Dougal or Brown. Same with Collins if he continues to perform. Mowatt and Woodrow will be gone. Carvare too. Pinilos will be deemed too old. Both Williams are out of contact as is Thiam. Someone will take a punt on Mcgeeghan. The threadbare championship squad looks even more threadbare. Complete rebuild again. Regardless of what they may learn.
Dont disagree but barring some of the usual suspects moaning, we had a nucleus of a decent squad. We havent this time and we are unlikely to retain the better parts upon relegation.
Dougall will be in the last year of his contract next summer and we all know how that goes. I think one of Mowatt/Woodrow will be gone in January nevermind next summer. Cavare and Thiam will both leave as their contract runs out. Mcgeehan spends most of his spare time down south back home so he'll be legging it back down there asap.
I blame Heckingbottom for the last relegation. During that 17 match run without a win had he gone for broke just two or three times we'd have stayed up.
Even if we did end up flying in league 1 , they would only dismantle the team again and sell at the first opportunity. Our only hope to break this cycle is to escape relegation this season and we all know that is highly unlikely as it stands. However we do have time and stranger things have happened. A couple of wins would change everything (easier said than done I know).
I'm going to try and not look at our scores during game time in the hope that I walk into my local and someone says to me, "what's up with your lot winning a match?".
3 or 4 years.... Just in time for them to be sold then when their long contracts come to an end. And we start the cycle again
We'll be sold for 30-40 million by then. I don't buy it that there isn't anyone out there with Barnsley F.C's best interests at heart that has the necessary funds to move the club forward.
I know it doesn’t feel like it now, but these lads have literally been chucked together a couple of months ago. No matter how bad this season turns out to be, you’d hope it will give them time to grow as people and players next season. Most difficult thing will be shifting a losing mentality.
I think there will be more Fulham, Swansea and West Brom style performances but not enough, soon enough to make a difference to the league table.
Also, I should add, that my belief is that ‘the plan’ can work at League One level because we can attract the best players in the league. It doesn’t work in the Championship and I’ve no doubt that if we did come up we’d find ourselves in this position again in 2 years time.
