Was that game when unbeaten run of about 24 games came to a end lost one nil was sum crowd that day packed in like sardines
I remember there was a terrifying crush at the turnstiles that day. It was the first away game I went with my mates rather than my dad.
I was there. Crowd of almost 30k that day. I think Cowling got the winner to end our long unbeaten run. I worked in Huddersfield at time too but had the last laugh when we went up and they just missed out!
Shows how time plays tricks with the brain. I remember so much about that day, where I was sat, trouble before and after, and I even remember getting peed off at not understanding a joke I was told pre-kickoff. However, I could have sworn the goal came in the 2nd half from Kindon after a mistake by Martin New!!! I have no recollection at all of the goal I have just seen! The mistake from New is there (he tipped a ball out for a corner instead of letting it go out for a dead) but no goal came from it!! I feel old.
Mick Buxton was their manager at the time. He lived (still does) up Ardsley and came in the Pheasant to say that there was only going to be one winner i.e them. Pains me to say he was right.
I remember next to nothing about the game, before or after but just knew it was their left winger Cowling that scored. Also remember a daft lad we knew at time getting arrested after they scored for gesturing at their fans lol.
I remember walking back through the estate to our car, a house brick whistled between mine and my Uncles' ears on its way into a white Barnsley minibus window. The town fans who threw it were already cut and bruised and I wonder to this day if they ever caught up with the van as it tried desperately to three-point turn and get outta there.
I wasn’t there but loved watching it, thanks. Amongst some very good football there were some absolutely top tache’s
Went on service train from wakey kirkgate and waited at station for special to come in cos we were a bit worried
Yeah, same here. Can't remember any of our chances, or if we had any. Just a very large away following and we ended up down near the corner flag. Can remember being impressed with the massive covered terrace to our right.
We was in home end, squashed in like sardines, when they scored everyone went crazy and we surged forward, remember thinking that everyone around us knew we was tarn fans, worst 90 minutes ever and vowed to never go in home end again, walked out, everyone around us was buzzing, had to pretend to be smiling ,inside just felt dead, how could we lose, that Barnsley team was unbeatable in my youthful eyes
That reminds me of first game of season after coming up from 4th. Wednesday at home, lost 3-0. Went on my own because my mates were on their holidays. Felt very lonely sat waiting for bus at Hoyle Mill. It was the start of only my 2nd season and I'd been used to seeing wins.
Haha....I was on holiday in Scarborough for that Wednesday game. Absolutely gutted when I saw fixtures. Remember buying an evening paper just outside Peasholm Park to get the results. When I saw score was glad I’d missed it lol.
The 2-0 win at their place made up for it though, apart from my mate having a police horse stamp on his foot after the game.
Travelled with my cousin on special train. Intimidating walk through tight run down streets. For once this superb team had an off day. Concur about crowded terraces barely any standing room difficult to celebrate any goal if we had scored. Remember a lifelong fan Alf Sedgwick well into his 60s walking back to the station and telling everyone about other sporting results that day. Wonder how many of that side of the early 80s still live in the Barnsley area ?
