i have said this for years, this country has been split for decades and all the referendum did was highlight this division. the EU and its growth from a mere trading block has always created serious debate and ALL three major political parties have either promised or called for a referendum on our continued membership, this notion that the referendum is all the tories doing is claptrap, the labour party twice promised a referendum then renaged and the only reason they did this was because they knew there was a huge appetite for one and the public by and large were unhappy with what the tories had forced thru parliament,Thatcher and Major were both subject to huge critisism on the dealings with the eu.
Good & accurate historical point Sir. What is the current way out of this malaise is the more pertinent question? I can't see the GE delivering one myself.
Our old mate JRM has been his usual despicable self today. The mask is slipping. How any working class person can vote Conservative is truly and utterly bizarre.
The referendum was indeed all about Tory in-fighting and the quest for power, it was obvious then and even more so now. It is not a notion it is what happened and continues to happen. There may well have been splits with different parts of the country, but take locally for example, it’s not just a split, it has turned nasty and that is caused by the referendum. People locally are turning towards the right-wing views and their even more horrible oratators. Jeremy Corbyn or whoever else became the Labour leader was always going to face a toxic and hateful barrage from the largely controlled Tory and right- wing media. I want to know why any working person would, A, vote for something that fails to protect Worker’s rights, and B, why they would trust a Tory Govt with a working majority to either continue to champion these rights or not take them away at all. Didn’t Thatcher and Major try to prevent and/ or redirect EU monies that was destined for the regeneration of these parts?.
I would not want such as thee or any of thi mates protecting me or any of my family with your attitude you must have been brainwashed like the pillocks that hung a picture of Corbyn up in an army shooting range and laughed while shooting him and I thought our armed forces were civilised, the forces like the police should be neutral, as for your mining background of generations I bet your ancestors are turning in their graves with your attitude obviously you don't understand what the mining communities have to endure from Tory governments since the 1926 strike and before, up to them shutting us down altogether without any care what so ever just left to rot.
And another. Using £250k of taxpayers money to tell lies via the Metro front pages. https://www.theguardian.com/comment...credit-deception-asa-taxpayer-funded-features
There is literally a conservative MP that was a member of the IRA. It's also a matter of record that Thatcher met covertly with IRA during the Troubles. Corbyn met openly for peaceful negotiations. I’m not interested in changing your mind as you will clearly believe what you’re told to, but I can’t leave this propaganda unchallenged for those capable of rationality.
So the Tories weren't at all bothered at losing votes and some MP's to UKIP then. If another party had been in power there MAY have been a vote on membership, but I would have thought it unlikely. Under the Tories it DID happen - it split the country almost irrevocably and permanently and so it IS their fault. To think otherwise is denying the obvious.
This mornings star....James Cleverly, chairman of the Tory party. When asked about the doctored video of Keir Starmer he first claimed it was edited to make it shorter.....than half a hour later in a different interview he claimed it was meant to be satirical and humorous. Then in his next interview he explained it by simply refusing to be interviewed despite being in the studio.
Dia Chakravarty, Torygraph Brexit Editior, now having a mare on Adam Boultons Sky News slot. And of course we had Andrew Bridgen stoking Rees Moggs mess this morning too. Incredible, and the GE campaigning hasn't even started in earnest yet.
It matters not to a lot of voters they would vote for the Devil as long as they shouted get Brexit Done . Three and a half years the Tories have had to Get Brexit Done but yet they blame everyone and anyone but themselves . They ignore the Tories whilst looking for the slightest excuse without looking for real evidence to hate Labour and especially Jeremy Corbyn . As has been said on this board they’ll be the first to complain if Tory Policy affects them or their family. Whoever votes Tory whilst their Children are struggling in zero hour jobs or low paid work should have a long look at themselves . This I’ve always voted labour and so have my family but I’m voting Tory this time I hope comes to bite them first.
Didn't Blair go back on the referendum promise because the constitution / treaty that would've been voted on was withdrawn anyway? All the parties may have called a referendum, but it was the tories that called a referendum with a simple leave / remain option, without planning for one of the two possible outcomes coming to fruition. Then drawing red lines which were impossible to meet without creating a hard border in Ireland.
Just to correct the first part, Maria Gatland is a Tory councillor (Croydon), not an MP. Claire Fox (Brexit Party MEP) also supported the Warrington bombers, so by extension that would leave all the 2.5m ex-servicemen to vote Libdem or Green in England with the option of SNP or Plaid in Scotland and Wales.
