I recall a similar thread to this about another game ages ago and it threw up some great stories, so whilst it's quiet I thought I'd give it a shot. Has anyone got any interesting memories of our games in the Welsh capital? Either at the old Ninian Park or the new ground? Three games stand out for me from memory: The 2003 trip that ended 1-1 with a last minute goal for them sending their fans crazy, think it was under Glynn Hodges at the time and we were still trying to keep our heads above the old 2nd division trap door. This was my first season going to almost every game but missed this one... probably a good job considering the events off the pitch. I vividly remember it on Radio Sheffield though for some strange reason, listening if we could hold on to an unlikely victory! I remember the commentators saying it was bedlam when the goal went in. Did anyone go? Scary that it's already 16 years ago. A few years later (2008?) we played them right at the end of the season, got a drubbing I believe and it was soon after the Wembley semi-final defeat. I remember loads of our fans went on a over-night trip to I think Merthyr Tydfil. Absolutely nothing of interest on the pitch, great weekend down there though! Finally probably the best match in recent memory, our 4-3 victory in 2016. Being awesome at picking games I missed this one too and when it got to 3-3 I resigned myself to us throwing it away. Someone needed us to win for a bet and he came skipping across with glee minutes later when Ryan Williams tapped in the winner. I've never seen a non-Barnsley fan look so happy we'd scored! Has anyone got any memories of any of these games or any others?
Went a few years ago when we played them on a Tuesday night because I was in Bristol for work so it was only a hop away. It was lovely because being a Tuesday night a million miles away, none of the dickheads were there. Just a smallish number of proper fans. There was a message posted inside saying "Cardiff City thanks all Barnsley fans for making the 400 mile round trip". You're welcome, I thought, I've only come 30 miles. I parked in a deserted industrial estate and got a parking ticket, along with a whole row of cars all the way up the road, citing "causing an obstruction". For who? There's no business traffic here. But the funny thing was a Cardiff fan got back to his car, parked next to mine. He also had a parking ticket and said 'bloody hell, they did this last time as well'. Well why the hell did you park there again if you have already been ticketed for it you plank.
THIS. I was there. Awesome night. Just after Thatcher had died as I remember a song or two from both sets of fans about the news.
Aye I was there too. 200 fans is pretty generous, there was 150 of us at most. Think it was a Monday night after we had to swap a few games around after our FA cup run.
I went in 2003 and it was madness. Got a truncheon round the head for my troubles. Christ knows why it happened.
Only been once, lost 5-3 early in Keef's tenure. We were awful, Cardiff could and should have scored 10, but took their foot off near the end and we pulled a couple back. Think Danny Drinkwater smacked in a 30 yard free kick as well. We've not got a bad record at their new gaff: Won 2 (2-0 In 2010 and 4-3 in 2016) Drawn 2 (2-2 in 2011 and 1-1 in 2013, both late equalisers for us) Lost 2 (3-5 in 2012 and 1-2 in 2018) I'd take a point tomorrow.
2003 was interesting to say the least! i bought the DVD of the police cameras around town from a geezer on ebay at the time... the game itself was about as one sided as it ever could be, they battered us but our defence was immense, think Tony Kay and Neil Austin played centre half that day After the match was carnage, obviously during the game the 200 idiots and stars of the above DVD were not even bothered about the match, they turned up at kick off and proceeded to just goad the Cardiff fans, they were up for more trouble at full time and so it appeared were the 5000 Cardiff fans on Sloper road outside! we were locked inside, they weren't moving from outside.... eventually the coppers formed a gap in the baying mob for the reds fans to proceed across to the car park to either get in the car or on a coach... here is where the problems carried on, i was staying in the in laws and needed to walk out to get picked up, the local bobbies had hastily arranged a few busses for the 200 idiots to get to the train station so i hopped on one of those as it was the least worst option at this stage, all was OK until 3 of the windows "accidentally fell out" as the idiots decided the bus was fair game..... once at the train station the plod were forcing all fans on the bus onto a train heading for barnsley.... do not pass go do not collect £200, as i tried to explain to said welsh police that i didn't want to get on train out came the batons and the shoving started! on explaining that i was staying in Cardiff the welsh plod asked me if i had anything to prove it....er yea ive always got a letter with the mother in laws address on! suffice to say he eventually relented and i scarpered into the night air 2 hours later than i had planned good day out!
We need a result tomorrow because we'll go further behind if we lose as four of our relegation rivals play each other.
I managed to miss all that. I think it was my first time at the stadium and I didn't know my way around so I caught a football service bus into Cardiff (I was also stopping over) and just remember speaking to a [insert a politically correct phrase here] guy who kept complaining that our goal was offside. Everyone else in Cardiff was complaining about the injury time played. What a night.
I was there in 2003. Absolute carnage. Only time I’ve left a game before full time because I didn’t feel safe.
Best time to be at a bfc game in Cardiff was the Swansea play off final . All Cardiff were on our side .
2003 was the time Cardiff fans were known for causing trouble and they wrecked one of our pubs. So loads went down for revenge
Ninnian park possibly 1980: sure it was 0-0. My main memory is a car full of fellow reds letting their pigeons go in the car park.
We were discussing pubs that have shut down last week and The Room was mentioned, now a fish and chip shop. I think it was this pub that was set on fire before the home game with Cardiff that season. I do remember their fans charging across the North Stand after their two goals, not seen anything quite like that since. There's some footage of Morgan and Earnshaw's goals on You Tube somewhere. Cardiff had a very different following back then, a different demographic to nowadays.
I was there. My main memories of the day are the massive pile of empty beer cans tipped into the car park from our coaches and a rousing rendition of "Roth-er-ham win the league...in the land of make believe" to the Bucks Fizz song. Edit: It was the 1981/82 season
