It's my lad's 14th birthday today and he fancies going out for tea. We're not loaded, but fancy something a bit different to the old Pizza Hut, Franky & Bennys etc.
Might anyone know of anywhere in the town centre that they could recommend?
We only live a couple of miles out of town but haven't set foot in that new Glassworks yet so hoping there's something in there worth a try.
Any recommendations would be gratefully received.
    Up the Reds.

I took my kids other day, there was a pizza place (but wasn’t open) a kebab stall and a Thai cafe, head good reviews about the latter and I can vouch for the kebab mate

    Thank you mate.
Is this within the Glassworks? Just had a look on the website but it's more about what's coming up in the future rather than what's available now.

The kebab and Thai place will be open for sure, my kids are 12 & 5 and it was spot on other day, we’re actually going back Christmas Eve too so I would recommend it

Evoo is good. Pizza and Peroni, whats not to like. Always pretty quiet as well.

It depends what your lad likes tbh. Fussy eater or can eat table top off? Willing to try new stuff?

Barnsley centre has some cracking places to eat now.

The Market Kitchen has a good variety and there is something there for everybody. We've ate in the Indian and the Thai and it was top notch. Not tried the Balkan food place yet.....

If he's a meat eater then the Brazilian places, Estabulo (old Whispers) and Flavela (old Walkabout) are cracking. Flavela is the better of the two as they have a better hot plate....mash, yorkie puds, creamy mushrooms.....

Turkish / Kurdish / Persian food is well represented by Istanbul (old Peels pub on Wellington St), Lemon Tree (Peel Square) and Pasha (near Silkstone Wetherspoons). They're all on a parr.

Pizza you can't beat Evoo (old Butterfields) and OO Bar (opposite Durty O'Dwyers) although i think there might be one in the Market Kitchen now.

I love our town. Its evolving. I wish more folk went in and used the restaurants. There's still a perception that there aren't any and that you 'have to' go to Leeds or Sheffield.

It's quite amazing the amount of new restaurants that have opened in Barnsley in the last couple of years, such a wide variety of places to choose from. Same for upmarket cocktail bars, can't move for them now and it's finally made the town somewhere you can have a nice night out.

Now if only more places started doing real ale...

    Brilliant, and thank you.
I am prepared to drive so the Leeds/Sheffield option wouldn't have been out of the equation, but some serious effort has gone into making our town centre more appealing so I really wanted to give it a whirl.
But as I rarely go in town (apart from pubs) I was looking for recommendations and above are some beauties so thanks to you all. Town it is.

Went in that new coffee shop today, Good Boy Coffee Shop. Got the Big Boy Latte, must say the coffee seemed stronger than I’ve had in other places. Really enjoyed it, but lacked a good choice of cakes.

Got to the Glassworks at 6ish, and it is a cracking looking trendy place. But all, bar one, of the food places had shut.
So nipped over the road to Falco Lounge where the food was outstanding.
Away win, yesterday, and a cracking meal today. No wonder I love this town.
