Apple Air Pods

I think you and I would fundamentally disagree on that one. I'd certainly agree it's for treats. I bought an Oculus Rift last Christmas for my oldest. That is more expensive than any Apple headphones but it is cutting edge tech and has given the whole family hours of fun including playing together (Look up Beat Sabre on YouTube).

If there was another VR that was just as good technologically but £50 cheaper then I'd go for that. If there was Apple VR that was worse technology but cost £50 more for a picture of an apple on the front of it - not a chance.

To my mind (and I wouldn't fall out with anyone who disagrees) you allow your kids to get sucked into that world and it stays with them.

They're a rip off. No in the ear phones are worth that much. Ever.

Take her to a hifi shop and let her try some proper headphones, they're going to be significantly better and cheaper. AKG K702's are wonderful for nearly half the price. Although there's no pairing, you're not going to lose then either

Like anything else there are certainly better alternatives out there. Unfortunately it is all about the fashion which I find a bit sad that they have to follow suit. Just make her aware of the possibility of them being snatched. My lads mate had some on whilst in town and they were whipped out of his ears. My lads 19 and he's been told not to even go there, one for that reason and 2nd cause they are Apple. Thankfully he prefers wired or over the ear headphones

 

Let’s be right, she doesn’t want them for the sound quality does she? There’s a few kids with them at school and they’re like gods. They get asked a million questions a day about them ‘where did you get them from? Can I borrow them? etc.) but never once ‘what’s the sound quality like?’ That’s an adult appraising the value of them using a completely different criteria to a teenager’s perceived value in them.

 

Things like that should be banned in schools imo. Encourages bullying and a culture of money buying popularity

 

Well no, which is ridiculous really given that's their primary function. For anyone who doesn't listen to music in a decent set of (over the ear) headphones, the first time is always a revelation. I was bought a pair for circa £50 and I can't go back to in the ear phones.

Why I hate Apple.

 

Much better out there for much less. Just keep drumming that into her and going through all the stuff she could buy with the money she’ll save.

Until I Googled it I thought that was a type of injury, in the sense of "He's out for 4 weeks with an oculus rift".

 

I bought the latest version of these - the EarPods 3. Look for their page on FB. Fast delivery and you can’t even tell the difference between these and the Apple ones. For £50 if you lose these, you can buy another 2 sets for the same original price as Apple ones.

I normally buy the real things, but thought I’d give them a go - can’t complain at all.

 

£7 on eBay, il caveat that by saying I’ve no idea of quality!

 

After a bit of lengthy research I recently bought a pair of Cambridge Audio Melomania 1s , What HiFi magazine gave them 5 stars . Would definitely recommend them , and at 100 quid very good value.

 

Does she have an iPhone?

If not, there's no point getting airpods. They just don't work as well on android.

I have the new 'Pro' ones that I use all the time, I think they're great. For me, it's not about fashion or anything like that (I'm indoors 99% of the time using them, the only time I'm not is at the gym, when nobody cares anyway). For me, it's about the ease of use across apple devices. I can leave my phone at home and listen to music at the gym through my watch, easily. I can then get home and connect them to my mac that I use for work, then connect to my phone. It's ease of use that being so invested in the apple ecosystem gets you,, for better or worse. If you don't have an apple device, they can't even get firmware updates, which could be an issue down the line.

 

Ive got a pair and thin they are great. Spent money buying other bluetooth earphones before and always niggles or something bugging. The airpods just work and don't get in the way. They connect straight away, great battery life and recharge time, you cant even tell you have them in and the sounds is good. They connect to my watch, laptop and phone great and use them all the time when out running or walking to listen to music and audio books.

Only 3 downsides to them

1 - the initial cost is high but you tend to look after the a little better knowing they werent cheap

2 - the risk of losing them. I was so diligent with them and still dont know how one vanished from the case! Sure the kids took it out but dunno. Ive stuck a tile to the front to stop me losing the whole case after the kids hid them and forgot they had done it. Gits lol

3 - If you wear things like high necks (coats, gillets) or things on your head like ear defenders they can sometimes get pushed out of your ears.

As for gimmicks - they are not. I use them constantly and they are very comfortable and just work. As with other stuff - i first avoided apple and the expensive brand but find they are never quite the same quality and yu end up with the quality one in the end.

Its like nescafe v proper filter coffee. Yeah they are both coffee but one is awful when used in comparison.

 

I agree. It's much cheaper to change your name.

The apple AirPods are great and the sound is much better than the previous apple wired variants. However they are expensive and some as we see would argue they aren’t value for money, even if they haven’t used them. Bose are also great but expensive. I don’t like beats the quality isn’t good and they intentionally load the lower frequency range to emphasise bass. The best option is to look at real alternatives in a lower price bracket but a known good reputation as per ginger wizards post. Another brand to look at is Klipsch who make great in ear devices a little cheaper. Of course the apple pose comes at a cost.

 

Bought 2 sets of the Wish site,cost £12 including postage,easy to set up and sound great,mind you I am a bit deaf.

 

This in spades. Father Christmas brought some for my youngest last week and she's delighted with them.

I'd discussed getting better rated other brand equivalents, but was informed this wouldn't wash (by older sister).

Her money, she's taking responsibility.

I'd also point out that anyone who starts advice with 'I'm not a parent but...' should be ignored for parenting advice.
