https://www.barnsleychronicle.com/article/landmark-building-is-next-to-be-demolished They should carry on swinging and demolish all of that block.
Disappointed with that decision - because that building would be ideal for a proper real ale pub called Barnsley Tap.
Never really realised how ugly the rest of the buildings in the block are but you're right, may as well do the job properly. It's a sha!e that the other chip shop at the other end is actually a beautiful building but surrounding by such ugly looking things. Also never really noticed how horrible the parkway cinema looks. In my head I had it looking the same as the civic but it really doesn't does it. By the way any idea when the next stage of the developments are due to be open?
Spring 21 is the final phase l think, a few shops on the 1st phase are in solicitors hands so will be opening at some point this year. The council are hoping to acquire the old YEB yard and redevelop that.
It's all starting to look really good and once the front is on the bit next to the Alhambra it will really make the main Street lol amazing. When it's done they want to spend an extra 500k sandblasting all the old buildings because when you look up at them Theres a lot of beautiful architecture that we just don't notice.
Are the council taking down bhs, boots etc too as they look massively dated opposite the new market to me
I was actually thinking that when I saw it was going to be demolished. Not enough real ale places in town imo. Loads of new gaffs opening but seemingly none willing to put the work in to keep real ale there.
I don't think they have any plans to, it would cost a fortune to buy both buildings but I think the boots building could be really smartened up relatively cheaply by taking off the concrete canopy over the doors and cladding the front of the building in wood. The bhs building I think it just too ugly to improve. The overhanging upper floors casts a Shadow over the whole town
Seems like Sports Direct are moving out of the BHS building and will be occupying space in the new complex. With Next moving out of the Alhambra we're in danger of shuffling the same retailers around the town centre.
Then move the demolition ball to the Big Man shop and Polish Library; open up all that area that was the cardigan club and get rid of that utter disgrace of a car park. This area could make a great open/public space with good vistas from Westway into that part of town.
Do you know who the new retailer are? I know JD Sports have already gone in but I hadn't heard of any other names as yet.
New retailers not announced yet https://theglassworksbarnsley.com/leasing-opportunities/ This link shows the ones that are under offer though The Sports Direct relocation includes a USC too that is new to town
Agreed. People could arrive in Barnsley, get pissed there, get a takeaway across the street, join the taxi rank behind the pub and the whole night out of beer, food and travel home will have resulted in barely 200 yards being walked.
There are but so many of them are crap. Courthouse, White Bear, Chambers, pretty much all the Peel street ones. All absolutely horrendous.
They cater for weekend drinkers - Friday and Saturday nights - when I would go nowhere near the town centre. I don't drink anyway so they can knock them all down for all I care.
We tend to start at the Tipsy Cow and Tin Oyle stop off at pour house and Arcade Alehouse then on to the Cucina in the market, I honestly think Barnsley’s definitely improving,
