Our old friend Adam Hammill

I doubt it. A 32 year with personal issues old who can't get in the Stockport team isn't going to reappear in league football. It's a shame but after promotion in 2016 he couldn't cut it in the Championship for 2 years and didn't do much anywhere else after. The only good game I remember him having then was his last home game for us in 2018 (against Brentford?) when he played central midfield and was excellent.

It's a shame he left us 10 years ago for Wolves. If we'd kept him we could have avoided relegation in 2014. He was one of that dying breed of footballers whose natural skill and flair can't be coached out of them. Now we have a squad of players who are cogs in a machine apart from maybe Woodrow and Mowatt. Hammill could get me out of my seat and his goal at Wembley against Millwall was one of those moments that come along once every few years if we're lucky. Goal of the decade along with McCourt's against Boro.

Genuinely lovely bloke and his partner was lovely too; made my daughter’s year by writing a letter to her when she named him her hero. He made some incredible memories for us at Oakwell and Wembley and is a Barnsley legend. Really hope he can get some support if he is struggling as he would be the first to help others.

 

She was with him at Cannon Hall GC along with two small kids. They appeared to be a very happy
little family unit. I imagine after so many years as a pro footballer enjoying a good lifestyle due to the wages
paid to you, when your legs " go" and you can't do it anymore, it must be really depressing to realise that
your lucrative football career could be over.

It's a sad fact that increasing numbers of current and ex- pros are now seeking help due to mental health
problems. A recent example is 29 year old Accrington Stanley striker Billy Kee, who has retired because
of mental health pressures.

She posted a heartfelt message when Adam was given the boot about giving your heart and soul and settling in a community and then having it all taken away in one fell swoop; it was very saddening to read.

I really hope his family are rallying round as he has so much to give.

 

As others have already said, he has a special place in the affections of Reds fans and is genuinely a
true Club legend. If he manages to get all his coaching badges, it would be great if the Club were
able to offer him a role in our Academy, as undoubtedly he has a lot of experience he would
be able to pass on to our younger players just starting out in the game.

 

He was awesome for us in his first stint and his goals at Wembley brought us all joy at the highest level. I'll never forget those times.

If AH is suffering with his mental health then I hope he gets the right medication and/or counselling he needs.

I suffer from MH problems, so I know what it's like to be a world beater and not be able to perform as wished/expected. (my wife can confirm this) ;-)

I meant a physically & mentally fit AH could still do a job at L1 or L2. He’s only 32.

It didn’t work after leaving us for a variety of reasons, but at the right club, with a good man-manager and setup he’d be ok. The lad’s sadly got personal issues, but it doesn’t write him off.
